if you believe in God, know His words, and acted as He expects you to... i think that after death, people you left behind will pray for you, keep you in their hearts and move on as they are sure you're at peace in Heaven with God. You'll have everlasting life there.
and if you died without ever believing God's presence in your life, and you kept yourself busy all your life enjoying only material things or enjoyed a sinful life (being selfish and too worldly), i think you'll go straight to hell and you would be sorry but there would be no turning back since your judgement is already there. people who pray alot, go to Church and know His words too well are not exempted. they too can go to hell if they have faith in God but did not do things as they should. there should be both faith and action...
so as early as now, i change for the better. I'd like to go up there where God is after my death.

I wish I could believe what I've learned in life. That you will meet up with your loved ones. I would love to see my father again, my grandmothers, my brother, my friends that I've lost recently, my great niece,so much for only the good die young.
The problem lately is that everyone passing away is my age and I'm wondering why I'm not being taken. My husband says it's because I have to be here for the kids, but, doesn't he have to be here for the kids too?

In line with islamic teaching after someone die,he/she will be asked by angel in his/her tomb after his/her soul given back to his/her dead body:
1)who is your God ,what is your religion,who is your prophet,what is your holy book,how you spend your money and wealth ? etc
2)God will give him/her a preliminary rewards if he/she has more good doings or a preliminary punishment if he/she has more bad doings and do not believe in Allah as the only one God.
They will stay in alam barzah or waiting room for so many years up to this universe will be collapsed.After that they will be awaken up on resurrection day and they will be measured in a final and fair judge by Allah.Then they will be separated into heaven and hell as their place. for receiving the final rewards. and the final punishments.

You either go to a place of rest until God calls for time to end and judgement upon the earth and all peoples. Or if your a true Christian, you go to Heaven. Or if your a sinner, you go to torment. One of the three.

You die and you either go to Heaven, hell, or Purgatory. You must a perfect soul to go to Heaven. But you know that, once your in Purgatory you at least have a chance to get to Heaven. We don't know what it's like, but we do know what it is.

Nothing, early religion didn't even have afterlife dogma, religion evolved from explaining natural weather phenomena to playing off people's fears to control the masses. It's working quite nicely.

5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even the memory of them is forgotten.
