Perhaps he simply needs motavation... it worked with both of mine. The way we ran it... as soon as baby started walking surely, we got a potty. on their own, whenever mommy came and sat down they did too. As their 2nd birthday approached, I found something they wanted... something irresistable. With my older, it was "school" (daycare a couple hours once or twice a week. her first full sentance was actually "Mommy, I want to go to school") I told her that if she wanted to go to school... she couldn't be needing diapers anymore... *at all*. 2 days, and we were accident free!
With my younger... it was the approach of her third before we came up with the ultimate carrot... she wanted to joing her sister in martial arts. Same thing... she can't do that if she needs diapers.... second one took a week. Sometimes they *have* the knowledge and understanding... simply not the motavation.
Hopefully its not a fear thing.

From what I've learned through years of working in the pedia ward of the hospital, you SHOULD just wait 'til your child is ready to poop on the potty. It's not good psychologically if one forces a child or constantly tries to make him go on the potty if he really isn't ready.
You'd know when he's ready....he'd be holding his poop in even if he's wearing diapers. That's the time to introduce this potty.

My son was 4 when we tried this. Break it down into steps, with each step takin a few weeks or more to master. First, keep the diaper on and just get him to poo in the appropriate place - in the toilet room - doesn't matter if he's standing up. Then, leaving his diaper on him if he wants it, get him to poo sitting down on the toilet. Then if he still wants the diaper, cut a hole in the diaper - a small one at first, and then as time progresses make it larger and larger. Our son ended up just wearing the waist band of a diaper for a few weeks before he was confident enough to throw it away himself. It's a security thing I suppose.
I ended up learning it wasn't worth fighting about as our son ended up constipating himself and being on medication for 1 year.

I used to know a child who always pooed his pants because he was unable to recognize the urge that told him he needed to go. Maybe you can have the pediatrician check things out and see if there is some medical problem that is inhibiting your child.
