I have been using a digital camera (point and shoot) Casio S600. Trying to take model pictures but it doesn't turn out very professional (indoors) . So I have decided that I should upgrade to a DSLR and could you guys recommend me that is good for an entry level photographer? Also , I would like tips on photography.
Thanks!

I have enjoyed reading tips at http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/
A DSLR wont make you a better photographer, but it will allow you more control, and offer better indoor (low light) photos.

The D40 is a good DSLR for the first time user as it has nice menus and user tips.

Take a photography class if possible. If not, buy a copy of "Object & Image: An Introduction To Photography, Third Edition" by George M. Craven. For portraiture, look for books by the late Monte Zucker. There are innumerable books on lighting for models and portraiture on ebay and amazon.com. The New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com) offers correspondence courses. They have been in business since 1910 so they are obviously reputable.

As to choosing a camera, that depends on your budget. IMO the Pentax K10D deserves consideration. It is a 10 megapixel DSLR with Image Stabilization (IS) in the body and the Auto Focus drive is also in the body. It can use every Pentax K-mount lens ever made as long as you don't mind using maual focus. With the IS in the body it works with the older lenses. Compare it to the Nikon D40x and make your decision. Check at dpreviews.com or shutterbug.com or popphoto.com or americanphotomag.com and search for reviews of both cameras.

Good luck!

Take a look at the Sony A100 and Pentax K100D Super. A100: 10mp, has Super SteadyShot in the body, has dust removal for the sensor. Can use every Minolta Maxxum Auto Focus lens made since 1985 - and they will all enjoy stabilization - and uses most of the accessories for the Konica-Minolta D5 & D7 DSLR cameras. K100D Super: 6.1mp, has Image Stabilization in the body, dust removal for the sensor and you can use every K-mount lens made since 1975. Yes, the older non-AF lenses will require manual focus and perhaps stop-down metering (its explained in the Owner's Manual) but at least they'll be stabilized. IMO these 2 cameras simply offer more features and benefits than their comparably priced competitors.
