so that if i grow it out it doesn't just fall flat in my face, it has some style to it.

The pin curls mentioned above me are an excellent way to do that. A curling iron will do similar effects. But a permanent wave, using larger sized rods (and done only by a professional, or you will be sorry!) varied with rods either one size smaller, or one size larger will give you a wave you don't have to work on regularly. It will last for about 3 to 4 months.

My mother used to wash her hair, & then use 1 inch sections - curling the hair in each section as tightly around her finger as she could. Then, she would use a bobby pin or 2 to pin the hair as close to her scalp as possible. After drying, she would just fluff the hair with her fingers. It always looked great. Good Luck & Blessings
