Interesting question. Obviously a matter of emphasis which can just be the whim of the writer. However, if you look at the JW use of the emphasis (John 1:1) then you can see that they call Jesus a 'god' (not God - as in the Bible) because they claim he was a lesser god than his Father and not actually God - as claimed by Christians.
