Habits are hard to break; that you broke one habit doesn't mean anyone else can too (or, for that matter, that you'll be just as successful breaking another bad habit you may run into later). But if you want to have a chance to make him stop I think you need to ask him nicely and try to find out if there is anything more to it than a habit. Has he ever seen a doctor? It could be it's something physical after all... and if not, come up with more reasons why he might want to stop. It's distracting in class and at work, for example; do his teachers ever complain? It wouldn't look too good in a job interview either, to be sniffling and coughing constantly. If it is only a habit it would be in his best interest to break it too!

I'd find it extremely annoying. But habits are hard to break. He's been checked for allergies and post nasal drip? While it may not be allergies, it could still be physical. I had a thyroid issue which caused my thyroid to swell slightly and since it was pushing on my esophagus, it caused me to do those little coughs all the time like you're describing. I felt like I had to constantly clear my throat and did it every couple of minutes. Maybe he should get checked for that....just to rule everything out.
If it is just a habit...be patient, hopefully he'll get out of it.

I'd be more worried about an underlying cause than I would be annoyed. That's a pretty unusual habit and I'm sure it makes his social life difficult. If it hasn't yet then it probably will soon. Like others have said, he should be checked to see what's causing it....anything from a physcial ailment to a psychological problem like OCD. Get the poor guy help.

It could be a simple yet annoying habit or it could be something more involved like Turret's Syndrome. Perhaps you could ask your doctor about it next time you are there. It is ok to be lovingly concerned about your family member. You dont say what age he is so it might just be an annoying phase that will pass.

Yes it's annoying, but you just have to put up with it until you turn 18 and can move out of the family house. In the mean time, you can close the door to your room and listen to music or TV through headphones.

What I'm wondering, is WHY you aren't USED to this habit of his by now...-everyone ELSE in your Family, seems to be! I mean, you've KNOWN your Brother all of his (or Your) Life- how come it still bothers YOU- so much??! Since everyone seems to be ignoring your Complaints about it- then maybe YOU should just try to IGNORE your Brother's stupid habit. MAYBE if you don't pay it any attention anymore- he'll cut it out. :)

As you live with a person long enough, eventually you will find all his/her of quirks and habits annoying. It's natural with humans because we always demand perfection from others but are too short minded to be concerned of ourselves.

No I wouldn't find it annoying at all - just as I hope people won't find my tics annoying - I genuinely can't help it.
And to the person above who gets annoyed with sneezing - how can you get annoyed at something that the person can't control like sneezing? Do you annoy yourself when you sneeze?

I think he does have an allergy and is not aware of what is causing it. If there is no mucus in your nose and it is not irritated there is nothing to sniff.
He has been your brother for some time, surely you are used to it.
