His has a single mom who works a lot of hours. I recently heard they traded in their car. And he stays up late with her when she can't sleep. I don't know what to say to him besides if you need me i'm here stuff.

Nobody likes to think of themselves as a charity case. But there are lots of things that aren't considered charity. Second hand cloths, homecooked meals, a drive to work or a bus pass you can't use. Even something like change for a coffee can be a big deal when you don't have alot. Little kindnesses can help relieve their stress a little and make you feel good at the same time.

Perhaps stop by with a meal , something you cooked like a casserole or something simple like some KFC, Subway,pizza and some soda. Tell them you are sorry that they are going through a rough time. Perhaps have them meet with your church pastor who might be able to refer them to some financial aid options or social services.

they could go to Social Services in their area and see what help is available.For example, depending upon how much she make she may be able to qualify for food stamps or they may be able to refer her to another group in order to get help.
