nano- little... very very little 10^-9. It can be used to create smaller computers, cell phones, etc. Also might develope micro chips that can be placed in new borns skin to track them when they are young. Protect from child stealers. Mostly used in technology. That is where it will help. Good Luck!

Nano tech is indeed as Kalra pasted the field of small technology.
So far is being used in such things as the Gsensor that triggers airbags and in very small sensor devices. The trend is to get smaller and more complex all the time. This month in Scientific Amercican is an article on small one shot chem labs on a chip for medical testing.
cheers

Nano technology (see previous answers regarding size) include using silver embedded in clothing to help prevent a person from catching colds (see Popular Science, October 2007), makes clothing last longer, can be embedded in manufactured items to track them from the manufacturer to the consmer; can track cattle from birth (especially a great idea if a cow gets mad cow disease); can be embedded in a credit card to thwart ID theft; makes for better food; the list goes on and on. It really is a Brave New World.

i'm sort of in this area...
well... this is the current 'in' thing that lots of research teams all over the world are venturing into. as the world becomes more advance, pple will tend to shrink down the sizes of machines....
basically nanotech talks abt a field that will marry both applied science with technology in scales of 10^-9.
nanotech is useful as it allows the size of a device to be greatly reduced and also weight is greatly reduced. and in certain aspects like when its being used in the biochemistry or biomedical arena, nanotechnology allows the device to become more sensitive as compared to macroscaled devices... therefore, cost can be greatly reduced.
nanotechnology is being used in a vast area... be it in electronic gaggets, medicine, pharmaceuticals etc.

Nanotechnology refers broadly to a field of applied science and technology whose unifying theme is the control of matter on the molecular level in scales smaller than 1 micrometre, normally 1 to 100 nanometers, and the fabrication of devices within that size range.
I know an example, that is a motor has been discovered in the size of nanometer dimension, so it is a working super small motor.

nano tech is little robots that can perform a variety of different tasks. they are so small, that they could be injected into the blood stream. we can program them to heal tissue more rapidly than our normal body functions. however, nanos are still new and possibly deadly.

Nanotechnology uses molecule-sized robotic devices to perform simple tasks. they can also be used in concert with each other to perform complex tasks.

Applications can include Micro-surgery, and micro-mechanical repairs.
