When you accept Christ as your personal Lord and savior, and ask Him to take total control of your life, even though you may continue to sin because of the sin nature that is in you, the blood that Christ shed on Calvary covers those sins (Past, Present, and Future). When we go to heaven, and God looks at us, instead of seeing our sins, he will be seeing the pure righteousness, and Holiness of Christ. God will be seeing the Nail Scarred Hands and feet, the Pierced side, and the thorn crowned brow; all the marks that were endured by Christ, because of his love for us. As Christians we will still continue to sin, but God gives us the promise that he is just and willing to forgive us, if we confess our sins.

So was the flood of Noah's time, but the reminder of the covenant between Him and Noah is still apparent today following a rainstorm: The Rainbow is the symbol of that covenant that God made with Noah that never again would he destroy the earth with a flood.
Yes, Jesus' atonement for our sins was a long time ago, but it is still applicable today because it is a promise. The Lord has promised to remove our transgressions (sins) from us as "far as the East is from the West".
Pray about it, seek the counsel of your pastor, priest, reverend, or minister. God's best is for you!

The answer is love. I know that sounds corny, but I am being totally serious. If you have ever experienced the Holy Spirit, then you will know what being loved by God feels like.
The more we are forgiven, the more we love. If God knows that we are real about our intentions, then this happens:
41 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled."
"You have judged correctly," Jesus said.
(Luke 7)

it may be long time ago, but the reason why he died for us is because of us and the generations to come, until He comes back.
if you truly believe in your heart that God has forgiven you. not just praying about it, but believing that you are forgiven. do not doubt because it would show that you don't have true faith that God is love and forgiving.
=D God bless you!

God is not constrained by the passage of time.
Christ was punished for our sins, thereby creating a conduit between us and God so that we can ask to be forgiven.

When you have really repented from depth of your heart and redoing sins has become for you so as to fell in fire.
This repentence will not forgive debts, other land or right occupied, all such things you have to return,

You are still in this world, so you are still working karma out, so you are not completely forgiven. In our deepest cries to the Lord, how can He or Divine Mother (his feminine aspect) not have mercy for us? But most of us have lived many lifetimes, how can we expect forgiveness of everything in one lifetime? We receive much Grace from the one we cry out to.
Look into remedies like mantras, selfless service, meditation, prayer, right life, not feeding addictions, etc.
