Hon, there was no Vietnam war, there was, however, an armed conflict in Vietnam. The effects of the V ietnam conflict are: There are a whole bunch of very angry veterans who never go their "Welcome Home or Thank You for serving our great country", and who got spit on and called "baby Killers". And, we all have some form of PTSD, and are suffering from the effects of "Agent Orange", dioxin, was an unexpected side effect of "Agent Orange". Exposure to the AO has cause many of our children to be born with birth defects and even some of our grandchildren are unfortunate to have some birth defects, who knows whether our great grandchildren will still have defects from our exposure. I believe that the conflict is spilling over on the GIs in Iraq because our country is becoming very divided about the war in Iraq and our government. This war is very much like Vietnam in that the soldiers cannot tell who the enemy is, the Iraqi's or the American public.

Seniors in high schools had to resort to YA for help on there history homework. No, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Vietmanese boats (they tried to escape via boats, most drowned :( sucks).
Also peigowder, what military idiocy? The US Armed forces didn't lose any major battles. Johnson put restrictions on them, thats what messed them up. They could have wiped North Vietnam off the map if allowed to. Also liberals being America haters? If the shoe fits sometimes.
And Matt C, if America is on the decline, then why are we at the forefront of every military and diplomatic action? Didn't see North Korea wanting to talk to China did ya? Nope. Didn't see Chinese forces in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq or Kosavo did ya? Nope. Don't see Iran taking a considerably hard stance against countries like Iran or North Korea getting nuclear weapons do ya? Yep you are so right on that one.

A major affect was the beginning of the end of the United States being a super power. We can see today that China is rising as a power and the US is indeed declining. It all started as a result of the Vietnam War and the failures of the Johnson and Nixon administrations to create a responsible foreign policy.

Even the double agents who traveled the Ho Chi Min trail and smuggled other supplies to relocation camps and then became boat people have adopted capitalism. This same double agent mind also wants his son in the pentagon. And his brother in Nam now complains of his own children who spend excessively for entertainment while the poor still toil.My neighborhood is now crowded with mid eastern clad women two blocks from the beach. It is all about jobs.and the suck up necessary to maintain them.

1) prediction that the rest of the world would fall into Communist hands was confirmed.

2) the press was blamed for the "defeat" rather than looking at military strategy/political idiocy.

3) Liberals were forever branded America haters.

I can tell you what happened to Helen and her family.

She grew up in Trah Vihn Province, kinda southwest of Saigon, yes Saigon not that other name. Her father was a minor official approving travel. I think they issued papers to ID people as safe, not sure though. Her Brother in Law was an ARVN Officer from 1955-1975. Was a Major with an Infantry Company in Trah Vihn. Acted as a liaison officer during our involvement. She did not like the guy her father picked for a husband and took off for Saigon to stay with a much older sister at 19 in 1970. By 75 she had a tiny condo like home.
When Saigon fell her father/brother in law/ his brother were placed in re-education prison. Her home was given 2 communist roommates. One liked this hot young 24 year old and it was put out or get out. Her mother died before her father was released. He was gone by late 77 early 78. The brother in law escaped and hid out as close to his family as possible.
She got on a boat in 78 with her 2 year old son. The engine died 2 days out. They drifted onto a reef several days later just off a small island belonging to Malaysia. Spent 2 years in a refugee camp there and eventually was allowed to come here. Her sister got out in 80 on foot thru Cambodia to Thailand. The oldest sister is still there. One niece walked out the same route by herself at 12. I don't know how the others got out but it was not easy for any of them.

That generation of Vietnamese is very anti-communist. Most love Ronald Reagan as he was President when most got here. When they learned of what John Kerry did during the war, this was new to most of them, they wanted blood. The brother in law wanted me to go with him to DC and help remove Sen. Kerry's manhood. He was pounding on a table screaming when I showed up. He wanted to know how someone could lie so much. One of Helens friends told me "We all want to know where our dead, raped and pillaged family are because no one is unaccounted for, raped or injured by your Army" They were pissed to say the least.
Twice I had to stop her from attacking a Vietnamese with a Northern accent. She told me how the Air Force would drop leaflets for 2-3 days before bombing surrounding jungle so they could evac. She also told me how VC would go into a village and shoot at helicopters to get them to return fire on a friendly village.
None of these many people had said anything in the previous 4 years I knew them. John Kerry set forth a rush of bad memories and outright hate for all but one of them (17 that were adults or teenagers in late 60's). They came to America not because they thought we owed them. They came here because they liked us. They all work hard and have paid more than enough in tax to repay what they got in welfare when they first got here.

look up "Killing fields" on google. You will be thoroughly enlightened about what can happen when good people walk away and leave a problem to those that cannot defend themselves.
