I'm having my wisdom teeth out on October 23rd. I went to the dentinst today and he gave me penicillin to take because I was in pain. I was surfing the web about why he gave me the medication and I read alot about that you should take the penicillin a couple of days before surgery. Mine's still two weeks away, and the medicine is only supose to last a week. Should I take the pencillin now, or wait?

I'm supposed to take one pill(500 mg) four times a day.

There is such a long wait because the oral surgeron will only be here on the 23rd.

Doctors/dentist knows best right.?

The reason why he gave you antibiotics is to get rid of the infection. It takes a while before you can have the full effect of the antibiotics, so take it now. If there is still infection maybe abscess or pericoronitis on the 23rd, even he
administer the maximum dosage of anesthetic solution, you are gonna be still in pain. Anesthetic solution wont work.

If you are in pain, the dentist probably saw that you had an infection in the wisdom tooth area. The only way to get rid of the infection/pain is to take the antibiotics as prescribed starting now. As with any antibiotic, take it until it is gone. If you are in pain and choose to wait on the antibiotic, the infection could get out of control and become very serious. If you still have questions as to why he prescribed an antibiotic you need to call the dentist.

You should call the dentist tomorrow and double check with them and find out if you take it now or in a week. Sometimes you have to take it to get rid of an infection ahead of time. But other times you take it just before to avoid any possible infection.

When in doubt, check it out!

Good luck!

HELLO TANYA,
THERE IS A QUESTION IN MY MIND AS TO WHY YOU HAVE SUCH A LONG WAIT BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT.
PENICILLIN WILL DO NOTHING FOR THE PAIN.
CALL THE DOCTOR AND ASK IF YOU SHOULD WAIT BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT HAVE ANY MORE ANTIBIOTICS IN YOUR BODY AT THE TIME OF EXTRACTION.
