Before you can defuse or disrupt an I.E.D. you have to locate it, they are being continually hidden in culverts, drains, concealed in the roadside margin or placed into vehicles.

Next time you are walking along the street try to calculate how many places that an I.E.D. could be hidden in to spring an ambush, the US do not have enough resources or manpower to watch / check every meter of road-space in Iraq.

Any Improvised Device is unique in the fact that its Improvised from everyday material, and not always military grade explosives, detonated by mobile phone wired to detonators, or by command wire and even human suicide trigger men.

IED's are meant to be hidden. That is their nature, and their strength as a weapon. You can't really detect them from the air (size or lack of, mass, materials), so you have to drive along and hope you can spot the signs that one is hidden. Sometimes you do, sometimes it finds you first (by blowing up). Look for more info or pics online. You'll see what I'm talking about. If you can talk to an Iraq vet, they can probably expand on this for you.

*We don't let them "stay hidden". We actively try to find them and destroy them so nobody if hurt by them. There are currently a few vehicles designed to detect them. But the thing is, you have to get close to it to detect it. Do you see the problem? If the explosion is strong enough, you still risk injury to the crew members no matter how armored the vehicle is. With the current limitations in technology, you still run the risk of injury. Somebody has to physically "clear" the roadway, risking injury. Then dispose of the bomb. I haven't heard of any feasible alternative yet. Not considering the vast expanses of roadways to cover constantly. It is very hard logistically...

I am not engineer nor IED manufacturer, but from that what I know the problem is that these devvices are problematic to detect due to their "dumbness" they contain minimum electronic equipment, no homing, etc. they are still technically the garbage on the street. it would take pretty much dog patrols to sniff this stuff up. the remote triggered are effectivelly fought with jamming the known cell phone frequencies, since many these devices are triggered by the cell phone dialing. as for the booby traps, nad mechanical triggers, it can be countered only by employing special movement tactics.

There are other options, like aerial surveillance, which can provide the coverage of suspicious activities along the planned convoy routes etc.

Better technology isn't quite available yet. Conventional mine detectors are too slow, don't cover enough area and by the time you'd get close enough to pick up an IED, it could have been set off already.

It would be nice if you could defend yourself against their more damaging attacks with relative impunity, but sadly things don't work that way. The best solutions to such problems usually involve a bit more creativity in the way of tactics. Sadly I wouldn't know about that, or I'd be working for the Pentagon as the top military advisor.

From what I've heard IEDs are buried in the streets or hi ways and detonated as the target passes by. The question is: How long does it take the insurgent to bury one of these devices. Once buried, certainly the spot can easily be detected as a malformation of the surface of the street. I suggest maximum use of drones. The drones can scout the area ahead of convoys for any suspicious activities particularly any malformation of the street surface which may indicate a buried IEDs. Further, minimise use of land transportation. Use helicopters or other fixed wing aircraft for troop movement and logistical support.

I used to work for TSA, and I think we the employees were the IED detection... If they went off on us the plane would be safe.

We have vehicles that can either detect them, detonate them or withstand the blast of them but they are finite.

they actually have a device to take out IEDs that uses water. it is still in experiment and is so classified they wont even release its name.
