What is the oldest religion that has survived to this day? I am thinking either Zoroastrianism (sp?) or Hinduism but I am not exactly sure.

Also, when did the prophet Zoroaster live?

To my knowledge it is Hinduism, because all other religions have some one as their originator, but hinduism developed from the experiences of people of earlier days no one can name what is the starting point of Hinduism or the person by whom this was started.

it would have been Hindusim, for Zoroastrianism sort of died out for a while, hence it had survived but had some form of revival. Much of other religion, did not survive completely, and had merged with others, like Shintoism with Buddhism and etc

As for the many answers of Christianity, the proper answer would have been Judaism, since Christianity was derived from Judaism, upon the appearance of Jesus, who as a Jew initially.

Hence, even by simple thinking, Judaism would have predated Christianity, even with your eschewed time line

Actually, Judaism is the oldest, because it started with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

But from the roots of Judaism sprang into being Christianity, and if viewed as a continuation or completion (ie the promised Messiah has come, thus fulfilling the Abrahamic covenant), then you would say that Christianity is the oldest, or at least as old as Judaism, since they run side-by-side.

But don't tell this to the Jews - they are offended when you say that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah.

Hinduism,Judaism,Christianity,Islam,Zoroastrianism,Buddhism,etc...does it really matter which is the oldest. It is like cracking our heads to find the origin of the sun, electricity, water and wind, and at the same time trying to enjoy its essence. We will be neither here nor there.

The most important is to enjoy the essence of each teachings, which is love.To love yourself as the child of the caring and compassionate almighty and share this love with all HIS/HER children irrespective of race, color and creed.

This essence can be truly felt by anyone who is practicing any of these teachings, whether its Islam,Christian,Hindu,Judaism or Buddhism, etc. It is a feeling that must be personally realised. What it takes is Faith(Fully Accepted In The Heart) and Devotion.I am a hindu by birth, but only realised and felt the true essence of it when I surrendered totally WITH FAITH AND DEVOTION under the spiritual guidance of my Guru,Shri Nimishananda Guruji(www.shrinimishamba.org).

Through His divine guidance and unconditional love,i was able to understand who i truly am.He used to guide the spiritual path to divinity is one irrespective which road you are taking. So if you are a hindu,be a good one,if you a Christian,be the same and so forth. This can be realized through knowledge of the self and the understanding of great teachings as written in the scriptures.

Our Guru always divinely advise us,LIFE is "Love Invited ForEver".To understand LOVE(Lots Of Vibrating Energy).Only when you unconditional love your SELF(Spiritually Evolving Life Form),will you be able to love others, whether they are close or otherwise.

Let us not look back into history,to find out who started first, let us dwell into the path that we are leading now to understand ourselves better so that we can find the true LOVE that can be shared with anyone, anywhere nad make our present LIFE a better one.As the old hindu saying goes,"The past is history, the future is mystery, what we have only have is the Present".Only by understanding and realizing our TRUE SELF,we will be able to LIVE THE PRESENT and SHARE OUR LOVE WITH OTHERS.

GOD BLESS,

maha

Can't BELIEVE people are saying Christianity. Judaism is several thousand years older for a start.

Keep in mind there may be no trace anymore of what the first religions were. Various native tribes have creation myths which could be tens of thousands of years old.

Paganism and star/sun worship goes back way farther than almost every religion including Judaism and Christianity.

Christianity....because the book of Job is the one of the oldest, if not the oldest religious books on record. It is so old it references dinosaurs in the text, need I say more? Not to mention the books scientific references were so advanced beyond even the science of the 1800 and 1900's it is hard to come to a conclusion that the God of Job is not the God that created this universe.

It is actually probably Shinto and all other related animistic religions. Those appear to be the most common in primitive societies.

And I have to say it...

Anyone who is around here regularly and reads my posts knows that I am a christian, but PLEASE. How could christianity have predated christ?

The followers of the christian God we believe in were Jews before they were christian, so judaism may have a horse in that race, but I think it is pretty universally recognized that christianity started with the ministry of Jesus Christ around 33A.D. At the VERY earliest you could claim it started with the birth of christ in 3 A.D., but absolutely no sooner than that.

Sumerian, Babylonian, Mayan and RA (Egyptian) teachings are still very much alive in beliefs of many people. They are all preached each week in all religions and churches around the world. The modern bible has lost all it's true meaning due to it has been edited and "revised" (changed) quite a few times also books and verses in the bible were removed you might like to read them.
