In my view the "fall from grace" represents the birth of human consciousness. When Adam and Eve both ate the fruit of the tree, they became aware of the world around them and everything within it. They gained knowledge.

Now, why wouldn't a god want them to have knowledge? For the same reason people didn't educate slaves...knowledge brings power! No knowledge, no questions, no uprisings. Simple as that.

Edit:
Since the point of biology and morality has already been brought up, I will not elaborate.

because Adam and Eve ate from the the tree of the knowledge of good and Evil, is why we are born with that knowledge; that is the evil that we were put under. We have fighting with that knowledge ever since.

If Adam and Eve didn't have the knowledge of good and evil until they ate from the tree of knowledge, then how would they have even known it was evil to disobey God?

We are only born with the knowledge of good and evil "because" Adam and Eve ate from the tree. It was supposed to happen. God knew they would make the choice to eat. It was planned before God created man. It was also planned to have a savior. If there were no sin, why would we need a savior, and what would be the challenge in getting back to our Heavenly Father?

Adam & Eve were not born in the usual sense. According to Genesis they didn't have the knowledge of good and evil until they took the fruit. That's both good and bad. I think the moral of the story is that knowledge of evil was the price we pay for knowledge of good. If A&E hadn't snitched the fruit we'd have no concept of good.

Adam and Eve didn't know evil until they ate from the tree of knowledge,in the sense that God would punish them for being disobedient. Example; If your Parents said " child, please, do NOT eat those cookies up there, they will make you sick"( for whatever reason), and you did,the fact that now this is your first punishment, you now know what punishment(or in Adam & Eve case evil) is.

They could not eat from it, because God told them not to.

According to Christians....Adam and Eve weren't born, they were created. Therefore, they would not have had the knowledge of good and evil, and would then HAVE to eat of the tree so that all of humanity could suffer.

They could not eat from it because they were told not to, and after they ate it they were punished.

I don't know where you got the idea that we're born with an innate knowledge of "good & Evil." Hold off on kids until you take care of that type of thinking.

We were not born with it. The thing was when we ate the apple, it wasn't that we would have the knowledge of good and evil it was that we would THINK WE DID instead of God.
