All I want to play really on my new PS3 is the newer sports games. NHL to be specific. And all my other PS2 games.

As stated above, yes your PS2 games will work if bought on a North American PS3.
Warning though, if you are buying one of the new 40gb PS3s, your PS2 games will NOT work on your PS3.

I guarantee you that they will work. Go to this website and make sure you type in all of the games you have to check if they will have major problems.

It will not work if you buy a US PS3 with japanese games because PS2 games are region locked while PS3 games are not.

you have have been given it the incorrect way around. The older fashions that are no greater in production, are the only ones that do play PS2 video games. all the hot ones which you may purchase new interior the dept shops now, which includes the slender, can not play PS2 video games, they do no longer seem to be backwards compatible in any respect:)

As long as you don't buy the 40GB model, your games should work.
With the 40 GB model Sony left out the PS2 backwards compatibility.

They will work on 20GB (not on sale anymore), 60GB, 80GB versions. 40GB doesn't have backwards compatibility. If you're from NTSC regions - get 60GB version - it has the best backwards compatibilty due to Emotion Engine chip in it. 80GB runs PS2 games on software emulation. If you're from PAL regions - they all run on software emulation, except 40GB - no backwards compatibility in Europe as well.

yes and theirs and adapter on the ps3 for your ps2 memory card. i love my ps3.

i believe that PS2 games will work on the 20GB and the 60GB. they won't work for the 40GB and the 80GB.
