You have to teach them that other people have value. If you care about other people, you let them know when they do something you think is nice. If you do, they might do nice things more often. People like to know that what they do matters.
Ask the child if they like to know when they do good. Ask them how it feels to do something well that other people like.
Keep it simple, but children tend to identify with people's feelings. They like to please others.

I have always told my children that its important to say thank you when someone does something for you, no matter how big or small, or when someone gives you something because they did not HAVE to do what they did, or give you what they gave you! It is a common courtesy and people notice when you use manners. It is so important for children to be taught these simple yet powerful tools.

Simple - tell them that it is an acknowledgement of kindess and that without it, the kindness may not be repeated. To make your point, you could revoke whatever specific kindness you have shown and explain that the next time, they must say thank you or the same consequence will occur. I'm sure that after a few occasions of having dessert or toys taken away, the "thank you" habit will become instilled.

It's important for other people to know that you welcome their help, or accommodations, or just use "thank you" as an affirmation of other people. It shows that one is a polite person, and that being courteous to others is nice. Just get them a "manners" book, like we all had as a kid. I remember a Golden Book that dealt with manners, and I still remember that book at a 24 year old. The bear getting up for the older woman on the bus so that she has a seat...hahaha.

Saying Thank You is a way to show that you are happy that they helped you, gave you something, etc.
It is the way that keeps everyone happy with eachother. Just practice giving them what they like and say " now what do you say" and they should eventually get it that they should say "Thank You". it is just something that you need tohave them repeat. And if they are exposed to it (just like they learn other words) they should pick it up easier!

Because it lets others know that we feel happy for what they did for us. If they know we're happy, they'll want to help us again when we need it. Manners makes others happy too.

Tell them they like to be appreciated when they do something for someone, so it's best to treat other people like they want to be treated by thanking them when they do something for the child or get something for the child.
