Ever heard the old addage,
"I'd rather have it and not need it, than not have it and need it."

That's my philosophy.

Kinda solves the whole problem doesn't it.

Virginia, the state I live in, has passed a statewide "open carry" firearms law. While some people feel comfortable carrying open, I don't, i carry with my issued CCW.

Who said the gun has to be for defense.

I collect guns, particularly those from the World War 2 era as that guns looked original then. Now days they all look the same, whether they are military or commercial production. If you don't believe me, go to any major sporting goods store; most feature one particular shape of stock, a similar barrel contour, and only 2 real colors - black or stainless.
I also love to target shoot. Going to the range every now and then is fun. I sometimes go to the range all day from from early morning til near dark. Some people like Golf others like to shoot.
Lastly I do have a gun for defense, but I see it very different. I hope I never have to use it, I would prefer it that way. I carry it according to the Boy Scout motto "Be prepared". Preparedness is very important to me since being a scout. It's why I carry not only a gun, but flares in the car in case of break down, a first aid kit in the house in case of accident, spare parts and tools for repair of household stuff.
Like others have said, I would rather have a gun and not need it rather than absolutely need one and be without one. Having one and carrying it guarentees I will have it when I need it, should the need ever arise.

Havig a gun is a committment and a responsibility. One far higher on the list of important liabilities than something like driving a car. A gun can be dangerous 24 hours a day, not just while driving.

If not taken with a serious conscious effort every moment of every day, the consequences are 'life-altering' in the extreme.

Such a burden is usually for those who will have it at the ready, either at the homestead or with a legal carry permit.

Like Frosty said so well "...we have decided to prepare for it rather than be a victim."

There are a bunch of really good answers here. Something for you to think about, though, is how do you know what is going to happen in the future. Read the police reports in the newspaper where you live and you will find people are sometimes attacked in places which reasonably should be safe. Criminals by the very definition do not follow laws.

That is the reason you carry a gun. If you knew when you were going to be shot at you would avoid the situation. Because we do not know when and where a bad situation is going to occur we have decided to prepare for it rather than be a victim.

Also guns are good for hunting, and shooting for fun. People use guns for self defense very often read John lotts work. Furthermore the threat of repercussions prevent tyranny and invasion.

Knowledge IS deterrence. If the bad guys know that a certain percentage of the population is packing they are less likely to offend in areas where CCW and open carry is allowed.

Our most vulnerable locations and targets have been "no firearm" areas. Schools being a prime target. My argument and John Lott's argument is that these locations should have some person or multiple people willing to carry to counter any threat. I believe we'd see a substantial reduction in certain types of violence.

Basically there are three ways a person will react when shot at:

1. He will freeze-up and do nothing (except maybe... Die).

2. Survival instinct will kick in and he will attempt to run or hide.

3. Adrenaline/outrage will kick in and he will... Shoot back!

Because Number one is NOT a good option & Number two is not always possible the reason we traditionally carry guns is Number 3: To... Survive. If this is still not perfectly clear then please refer back to option Number 1: Freeze-up & Die!

Best.

What good is it NOT having a gun when you don't know when you're going to be shot at?

Since I always have a gun I'm always ready to defend myself, and whoever attacks me will probably die. If I didn't carry a gun then it wouldn't matter when I was attacked since I would never be able to shoot back. This question is stupid. I hope you grow up some time in the next few decades...

That is kinda the point. You don't know when you are going to be shot at so you carry the gun. Hell, if I knew when I was going to be shot at, I WOULD NOT GO THERE!
