Well, they've got a high center of gravity and they're heavy, so you'd better remember to drive with that in mind. It won't handle like a normal car. Also expect the fuel economy to be pretty bad.
Otherwise, they're among the most well-regarded 4x4s ever. Particularly the older (1960s through 1980s) ones. If you're getting one of the Jeep-like Landcruisers, you're driving a vehicle which a lot of people find to be inherently awesome.
I don't think I'd have one as my only vehicle, but I'd have one. My dad had one (modified 1973, with a Ford V8) that could power through hip-deep snow. They're awesome machines.

My father bought his Land Cruiser in 1998, which was the first year of the latest body style, I think. He has well over 150,000 miles on it without any problems except for a new AC. However, we live in South Florida and he pushes that AC pretty hard. He usually buys a new car every 4-5 years or so but loves his Land Cruiser so much he doesn't want to part with it even after the 9 or 10 years he has had it.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but I am assuming this is your first car because your parents are buying it for you. It might be a bit too big for a first vehicle. A 4Runner might be better suited for a first time vehicle. I had a 98 4Runner which I pushed well past 180,000 miles and beat the hell out of all through college. I traded it in last year and regret it.
Overall I consider Toyota products to be the best in the world. They are very reliable, reasonably priced and can really take a beating.

Yes they are legendary vehicles. What kind of Landcruiser? There are many varieties and they changed quite a bit through the years. If you live somewhere other than the USA, you have even more Landcruisers like the 70 series and the Prado. In the USA there were many version through the years including the FJ-40, 45, 55, 60, 62, 80, 100, and now 200.
They are very capable, but they're heavy and not very fuel efficient. I opted for their lighter cousin...the 4Runner.

I spent a lot of years as a partsman for Toyota and we had a saying... "old Land Cruisers never die... they just get rebuilt".
If you could give us a better idea as to what year and model you are talking about, we could all get more specific. Everybody has said they are heavy, mediocre MPG, but they are bullet-proof and tough as nails. I have supplied parts for Cruisers from 1959's to the new FJCruiser. They are the ultimate 4X4... (I know some Jeep owners who may argue that point) but Cruisers will go most places in "stock" condition that other vehicles would have to be heavily modified to go. The Rubicon is one of those places....
If your parents want to get you a Cruiser and you don't want it... have them call me, ok??? :-}
Good luck

These are one of the top ten best vehicles ever built. They travel through African Safaris, The Jungles of the Rainforest, the Sahara Desert, the Andes Mountains of Peru, The tundras of Northern Alaska and Antartica, and the Himilayas in Asia. Think the strength of a Land Rover with much better reliability. You can go anywhere in a Landcruiser. Fuel will kill you though.

Get the FJ Cruiser. The Escalade is nice but #1 its made by GM so right there you're dealing with poor build quality and marginal longevity. #2 Its such a poser vehicle
