Try to find someone who's not in it for the business, but for the love of teaching. By the way, learning to fight and defending yourself aren't the same.

Cnote and Terintu both have some good answers and I would only add that when you fight-you fight to win. The idea that martial arts is for defense only does not exist for some people who prey, victimize, and assault others. When they become aggressive and attack you or others then the you also need to leave the "for defense only" idea at the door and think more in terms of survival and coming out of the situation intact and on top.

The "for defense only" concept in martial arts means you don't prey, victimize, or use it against others unjustly-it does not mean you take a beating or half of a beating before you should defend yourself.

There are only 2 true self defense techniques walk away or run away not only morally but also in the eyes of the law everything else leaves you open to injury death criminal charges or lawsuits no matter who started it.
When you can retreat no farther or the attack is an ambush type you may use skilled methods .Be alert and aware of your surroundings and the people in it .Avoid trouble by recognizing the potential for trouble before it starts and walk away.
