I am a draftsman that just started working for a structural engineering firm and I am way behind on the learning curve. I am trying to find a book that is an overview, to at least aquaint me with the basic terminology and principles. Thanks in advance for your help.

I am a structural engineer as well and the previous answer in right on the money. You cannot learn structural drafting from books. You best source of information is the engineering staff at your firm and previous sets of drawings that went out before you became an employee. Look for similar type projects and study them. The learning curve is steep to become a effective structural cad operator.

Go to the Lincoln Arc welding Site: https://ssl.lincolnelectric.com/foundation/store.asp?PID=16&cat=8

Get the books:

How To Read Shop Drawings
Design of Weldments
Design of Welded Structures
Fabricators' and Erectors' Guide

These books contain a wealth of technical information, structural design, and welding details, and are very reasonably priced.

I am civil grad with 19 yr exp BSCE & MSCE PE. I would say both have pluses and minuses- Civil eng pay is a less than Mech but employment does not fluctuate as much especially if you have your PE (certified). Mech will generally make more money out of school but you need to ask yourself what class or classes you like the most in school----Then pick it and stay with it because you will be working in that area for possibly the next 44 years--- It helps to enjoy getting up and going to work in your chosen profession!

Nice, I'm a structural engineer. You should know that a good draftsman should have only one thing: "3D MIND" the most important thing is good imagination, you should see every object in 3d shape first in your mind and then draw the 2d plan or elevation. work on your mind to see every 3d in form of 2d and every 2d in form of 3d, the best book is your imagination.......good luck

College textbooks would be the way to go. Try to check out what seems to be the best for you. Chances are, the most popular ones are also the best.
