Why do SOME Christians think it is all right to scare the crap out of their children with stories of going to hell? I mean, if your child is gay or wants to worship another way,but helped with charities or end up with a really good scholarship, shouldn't you just be proud that they are a good person?
(I did say some, because my mother is just proud that I am making something of my life and she is a catholic.)

Ok, one of these answers is exactly what I am talking about. I mean, do you get a charge out of scaring the crap out of a little child? Besides, I do not believe a "loving" god would condemn any one to pain and suffering for eternity for just being different.

It's worse than disturbing. It's sinful, and not in the allegorical way, either.

Your question aims at the wrong target. If it is true then people should be scared, and it would be more cruel to not tell them about it. As far as worshiping a different way goes, it is more important to try and find out how God wants you to worship. It is not about you, me, or anybody else. What does God want? That is the real question.

I agree using 'scare tactics' is wrong. The Bible says if you raise a child correctly and in God's Love, when he becomes an adult, he will not depart from that way. I totally believe that. Children raised in a Christian atmosphere with displays of God's love without physical and emotional abuse are almost positively going to grow to be the same type of adults. Those from abusive homes usually grow up abusive. And yes, always show your child you are proud of any accomplishment, whether they adhere to your religious views or not.

Sorry, but just turning out to be a good person, getting a scholarship, or helping with charities will not get my child into Heaven. I would never stop praying and talking to her about Jesus. I would want my children and my husband in Heaven with me. Nothing else matters.

Well, I think that Christians believe only god can judge so they shouldn't scare anyone with going to hell stories. Plus, positive reinforcement is much more effective.
I am glad you have a supportive mother. I don't have kids but I have step kids and I would love and support them no matter what their beliefs.
I do understand that if you have kids you want the best for them so if you truly believe in enteral life you would want that for them, too. But, using a religion to scare a kid into acting a particular way is really wrong.

My kids know about hell because Jesus taught about hell, and it is in the Bible. He WARNS us about it, so that we wouldn't want to end up there. He also tells us how to AVOID HELL. My kids also know about Heaven and the rewards you receive when you OBEY GOD, because He also wants us to know about that so we would want to go there instead of hell. I hope it does scare them away from Hell. I love them, and I don't want them to go there. So, are you saying your mother is right, and Jesus is wrong? You said she is Catholic, so, she must have a Bible, right? Does it have a New Testament in it? If it does, maybe you should read it and see what it says about hell, and HEAVEN. God Bless

I think they do it because they just want their kids to do the right thing and grow up to make good decisions. I do find this disturbing as well, but the best we can do is raise our kids with God's guidance and offer His truth and ways as the foundation for their lives and if we go to Him in prayer, remembering that children are blessings, He WILL help us and help them as they grow :o)

You may not be very accurate in your assessment of Christian parents. I have never known any Christian parent who scared their kids with stories of going to hell. In spite of your misconceptions, Christian parents love their children and actually treat their children with much higher respect than most other religions. If you ever want tto see a beautiful group of healthy and well adjusted children just go to a Sunday School and open your eyes.

many religions dont care if you are a good person or not.
they just want others to believe in the same thing they do. it validates their beliefs if lots of people believe in the same . makes them feel more secure. the more the merrier.
god forbid someone else is different from them. they will lose their comfort zone.
