i wasn't always an atheist.
i don't doubt the existance of god because i can't see him.
im atheist now because i asked for help. i needed help. i prayed. i believed. and where did it get me?
after i gave up i pulled myself out and decided that if god gave up on me then i'd give up on him.

Have you seen the shadow of the Earth on the Moon during an eclipse? It doesn't take much to figure out it's spherical.
We've discovered quarks that are a fraction of the size of an atom. There are probably over a thousand trillion of them in this period --> . We've detected galaxies that are so far away that the light coming to us from them is BILLIONS of years old -- older than anything else we can see. The universe we live in is so incredibly huge ( http://www.rense.com/general72/size.htm ) that we cannot even comprehend it with our little minds, yet still we have no trouble believing it exists because of all the evidence for it.
And in all that searching, we haven't found a magical skydaddy controlling everything. Do you honestly think it's because we haven't looked hard enough?
It's much, much more than just "not seeing Him."

Well i'm atheist and so is my family, but I think that people believe in God because they just need someone to rely on... or if something happened that seems impossible, they will want an explanation, and their only explanation is God 'The creator of the world', or they want to believe that there is a life after death and they want that and to do so they must believe in God and be a good person, but if they do nothing wrong in their life and are a good person but then they die and find out there is no god or life after death, they're going to be very disappointed :L

I don't think god isn't real because I can't see him. I think he's not real because there's no evidence. Besides, I don't think they had microscopes in Europe at that time. And no I would not have stopped Columbus's boat. No one had seen a round world but no one had seen a flat one either.

So what you mean is the toothfairy, ninja turtles, the jade emperor, the monkey god, the invisible pink unicorn together with the next 50,000 gods are real too?
Actually the world was proven to be in spherical shape by the Greeks before even jesus was born, it was the church back then who insisted on the flat earth where their god blanket it with stars and clouds. Those who opposed were put to death.
Put it this way, if the bible did not think earth is flat, then how did satan bring jesus your christ to the top of a mountain to see "all the nations in the world"? I guess the jews are not so advanced in science to know earth is spherical shape back then.

Yersinia pestis (plague bacterium) is relatively easy to characterize. Bacterial colonies can be seen with the naked eye.
Sailors of Columbus's time knew the Earth was round. You are simply believing what you want since you don't like reality.

"Atheists...if God isnt real because you cant see Him..."
Bzzt. Didn't take you long to screw that up.
The fact that we can't see gods is not the reason why we don't believe in them. It's because there's no evidence for the existence of any gods.
Your weak grasp of the facts explains your position quite well.
Oh, and pretty much everyone in Europe knew that the Earth was round well before Columbus came along. Even Aristotle knew - he even had a pretty good estimate of its diameter.

You really think that is the definitive answer to why Atheist do not believe? How silly! I cannot speak for all, but many would agree, we know there is no god because we educated ourselves on the subject or even better used common sense. Come on, you really have Atheist confused with xians, trying to use Columbus. LOL Silly!

I find the whole thing about a God creating this world, the characters in the Christian bible and the like a bit loony. Of course, that's just me.
I can't see the wind or love, but I can feel both. Another more comparisons you want to try?

No. God is Imaginary and that is why the plagues raged in Europe without his interference.
