Yes, I did. 12 years in a public school system and I didn't even commit a crime!
If you ask a question like that here, you're gonna get, "If you do the crime, you do the time" type answers.
A really bad prison and really bad law enforcement officers make you hate yourself. Then you start to hate everyone and everything else, naturally. In a good prison, I guess the officers are decent role models--people we'd want to be like.
So...there needs to be some acceptance of what you have done. But then you need to be allowed to move on and try to become a better person. I think the criminal record is the biggest barrier to doing that, because then you are really limited in where you can work. Few people appreciate that.

The fact that you are asking this question means that you remain a gentleman.
A friend of mine was framed and jailed for a crime he did not commit by his greedy in-laws who wanted his money. I yet hold his house for him as trustee (ha ha! they lost) and I have made him rich secretly (as is only right) using a series of baffling Trusts.
He has used his free time in jail to study various subjects such as history and has thus become a more interesting man.
I say to you 'Worryus Nottus!'; you are no worse than any of us.
(I write this as a drunk and Pro-Consul).

I don't know if this counts but I have been in Juvenile multiple times and just recently got out of a 7 month rehab for anger and computer addiction (no joke). I believe that all had an effect on me. The effect of Juvy was that it scared me to death. The effect of the rehab was to help me know how to "fix" myself. As far as big boy jail I haven't ever been and hope never, ever to be.

JUST EOS(END OF SERVICE) RETIRED FROM CORRECTIONS. LAST 34 YEARS INSIDE, JAILS AND PRISONS IN WASSHINGTON STATE AND ALABAMA. WORKED 12-16 HOURS SHIFTS. PROBABLY GOT MORE TIME INSIDE THEN YOU DID.
IT PROBABLY MADE YOU WORSE BECAUSE YOU ALLOWED IT TOO. MORE DRUGS INSIDE THEN ON STREETS, AVAILABILITY, BOX BREAKERS, ENFORCERS FOR GANGS ETC..
IT IS VERY HARD TO LEAD A SOLEN LIFE INSIDE WITH ALL THE CORRUPT INFLUENCES AROUND YOU.
SOME DO IT THOUGH AND GET OUT NEVER TO RETURN AGAIN.
SOME RETURN AS FAST AS THEY GET OUT.
WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
IF I DID MY JOB YOU WOULD NOT WANT TO COME BACK TO WHERE I WORKED.IF YOU DO NOT COME BACK THEN IT WAS SO MISERABLE AND EXPERIENCE YOU WOULD WANT TO RUN.
LIKE THEY ASK "WHO ARE YOU"--"I AM YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE"
MAKE MY DAY AND ALL OF US IN CORRECTIONS-STAY OUT
#**THE SAYING FROM THE TV SHOW BERETTA"IF YOU CANNOT DO THE TIME / DON'T DO THE CRIME." STILL VERY APPROPRIATE TODAY. INMATES HATE A SNIVELING *****.

My husband has been in prison. He did 4yrs, for a drug charge. It has made him a very hostile person. An employer sees this on his record, and doesn't want to hire him, and give him a chance.
