I have been in the National Guard for five years and was recently diagnosed with ADD by a civilian doctor. I was prescribed Adderall XR and it has changed my life for the better in so many ways. I was unaware that the Army doesn't allow enlisted members to be on ADD medications until a few days ago. I am also facing an upcoming deployment in January. Will I be punished if I notify my chain of command that I have been diagnosed with ADD after my enlistment? Any guidance will be appreciated.

**I went to a civilian doctor because I am in the National Guard and the nearest military hospital/TMC is over a hundred miles away from the city where
I live. I had no prior knowledge of the Army's policy on ADD.

why did you go to a civilian doctor? i think you knew what you were doing and knew that it would get you kicked out of the military. it's OK if it's true.. just man up to it.

You must inform your command immediately. Aside from any policy issues, your records should always indicate any perscription meds you take on a regular basis, because other meds that may be used in emergencies can react poorly with them. I do not know for sure what the outcome will be, but it is best to handle it now.

Bring it up to your chain of command. As long as you had no idea that you had ADD prior to enlisting, and didn't conceal it in order to enlist (fraudulent enlistment) you didn't do anything wrong. You won't be punished. I would advise them though, in order to prevent any problems as far as urinalysis or such at the unit. Fill in your chain of command. They should take care of you.

No punishment for notifying your command. In fact, your command has to put you in front of a medical board to arrange for your discharge under honorable conditions for a medical condition that is disqualifying for retention.

you cannot COME IN while on ADD meds. once in if you are diagnosed assuming that you are cleared you may stay in. But yes, you absolutely must tell your chain of command you are on Meds now.

I'm in the Air Force and on Ritalin. (In the Air Force) they only tell your chain if you are unable to function without the medication.
