I recently bought an acoustic guitar because I always wanted one. What is the best way for a beginner to learn how to become somewhat good with the guitar? Is just playing around with it a possiblility.

OK. Do you have a tuner? If not, get one.They make life so much easier. Get yourself a book of chords. Choose 2 or 3 to start with. A D E are good. Start with one, (eg A) learn that then learn another one and practise changing between them. When you have all three under your belt you can play stacks of stuff, eg Johnny B Goode, Roll Over Beethoven, Hound Dog etc etc. Hope this helps.

I think taking a class is best as it gives your structure, feedback and the ability to ask questions.

check around, there are probably inexpensive classes near you.

no, you have to buy a few teach-yourself books. First thing to do is learn how to play open chords.
