Old: The Canon 300D is still an excellent dSLR and can be had reasonably.

New: The Canon 400D XTi is a pretty good entry level dSLR

Not so basic: I absolutely love my Canon 30D

Only use Canon digitals so can't tell you about the others like Nikon and Fuji.

The Nikon D40 is targetted at first time DSLR owners, with very user friendly menu's. That makes it a standout choice as the mot basic DSLR to use.

I own a Nikon D50 SLR that is no longer on the market but I love it . Had it about a year and very easy to use.The D40 I've heard is a good one for beginners like me.Ive shot over 1200 pics and still had more than enough battery life.

Check out the ease-of-use factor on the cameras, if I am reading your question correctly. My personal rating is for ease of use,
Pentax is easier than
Nikon which is much easier than
Canon

I have tested this with friends who find disposable cameras a challenge and they have managed to take a decent photo with my Pentax after a few seconds to find the ON switch. I am currently using a Pentax MZ-S film camera with, roughly speaking, a zillion controls.

When my ship comes in, it's a K10D for me. But lots of green stuff ...

Nikon D40 is as basic as it's going to get. Great price as well.
