If it's internet chat, that's supposed to be just like speaking. I don't mind there. However I've seen people trying to write a short story and or business report and they used 'chat speak' there too... yes that is inappropriate.

Most people write the way that they talk. If no one corrects them while speaking, they will continue to write that way. That's one of my big issues with slang. The majority of people who use it, don't know how to turn it off.

People do write the way they talk. If they have not been taught any other way or corrected then they will continue to do it. My problem is, there is a time and place for everything.
for ex. (at home with friends) wut up homegirl!?
(at the office) May I help you sir?
When people intertwine the two, grrrrr.

this doesn't bug me because it's not new. The girls did it in the 80's. I remember hearing it all around as a child(even reading my older brothers notes from girls would have it). What bugs me is when ppl verbally communicate using text talk. It sounds so stupid, and honestly they look retarded doing it.

People just say 'like' because they have to take time to formulate a sentence in their heads and saying 'like' gives them a little time to think, just like 'um'. I don't say it like that though, I can be bothered to make a running sentence.

What's worse are the "I'm, like"/"He's, like" combinations to recount a conversation.
E.g. I'm like, "Why aren't you wearing a tie?" And he's like, "I totally forgot to wear one." And I'm like, "Well, they won't let you in without one." And he's like, "Oh, let's go to White Castle instead."
