You have to be Italian to be in the Italian Mafia. And also its a family thing, so if you dont got connections, don't ever expect to be part of it. And just to let you know theres more then just an italian mafia. Almost every county has there own mafia. There's an russian mafia, mexican mafia, german mafia...and so on. People who idolize the mafia are stupid, the mafia tears familys apart.

Alright, lets see if I can give you a decent answer...
First, I assume when you say "mafia" you are referring to "La Cosa Nostra" which is an Italian organized crime syndicate, and that you are ignoring all the other "mafias" such as the Russian, Albanian, Irish, French, Norwegian, Whatever mobs, Japanese triads, South American cartels, and all the other criminal organizations found throughout the world.
Further, I assume you are talking about the American faction of the LCN, since it is logical that only Italians would be involved in the Italian faction of the LCN.
Having established that you are speaking only of the American LCN, we can move on to your question...
Association with the LCN is not restricted to only those of Italian ancestory. Any person can be associated with the LCN. In the past there have been many notable Irish, and Jewish associates of the LCN.
Asscociates are not members of the LCN "Family" however. Membership ("Made" status) in the LCN is restricted to those of (typically) full blood Italian herritage. The concept for this restriction always was that if you are a full blooded Italian, you would be loyal to those of your blood. It would also mean that if you were to turn against the organization, they would be in a position to go exact retribution against your family back in "the old country" (remember, only until very recently, most of those who were involved in the LCN would be either first or second generation immigrants to the US).
Please also note that "Made Man" status applies to a very small percentage of the total number of people associated with the LCN.
I hope this helps answer your question.

It's a family run business..... and so ya gotta be in da family.
Thanks for the low ratings... I can tell you that the Mafia in Italy is managed by Italians. they may have people other than Italians working for the organizations but it's an Italian run thing. Italy has other mafias as well - The Albanians, Serbs, Romanians, Russians and now even the Chinese.
The Mafia exists and it's an every day reality in Italy. Anyone who doesn't believe this is naive and out of touch with reality. Furthermore, the Mafia isn't only in the south of Italy. The Italians in the north are pretty well organized too. Though the southern "gangs" operate in the north there are those in the and from the north that are mafiosi....

says who? first of all, mafia is not an exclusively italian thing anymore, and there are many prejudices about that, of which i must admit i'm tired of... when i go abroad so many people say "hah you're italian.. pizza and mafia?" maybe mafia was an italian thing decades ago, but now it's a very complex organization, with connections all around the world...

By not asking that Q online.
How is that a "racist question"? the Mafia originated in Sicily.
