Well, since there were originally 613 commandments, Still are for the Jewish, and they have somehow been whittled down to just 10 they would probably be different.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever... but having said that, things are a bit different to when the 10 commandments were first given. The most important difference is that Jesus has come, died on the cross for our sins and risen again so we could have new life.

Jesus obeyed everything that God commanded, whereas as humans we fail to do so (Romans 3:19-20). We aren't saved by keeping the 10 commandments - we are saved by trusting in Jesus' death for our sins and living with Him as Lord of our lives. This means living as He would want us to live. He doesn't just want us to just follow the black and white letter of the law but to follow the spirit of the law. Jesus says that the most important commandments are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbour as yourself. When you think about the 10 commandments, these are really the core of them.

God threw them out nearly 2000 years ago.

The ten commandments ARE the old covenant between God and Israel, and that covenant ended.

Christians keep the Spirit of the law, and do not serve the letter.

Your question contradicts itself. To "throw out" means to do away with. However, if God were to give us ten commandments for this generation in the advent all the world no longer had record of them, they wouldn't be new but the same commandments. Just like the law of gravity doesn't change unless God makes a miraculous exception such as Ezekiel's chariot ride, you can count on it staying the same until every bit of God's word is fufilled. It is forever settled in heaven. The Word of God is the very breath of God. You can count on the fact He still is of the same essence as always - He's still holy and still jealous and still a spirit that must be worshiped in spirit and truth. He still wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength which is our reasonable service and He is still our refuge, a present help in time of trouble. He still hates sin and still loves us and still offers salvation through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Through Jesus, He has thrown out the ten commandments...and replaced them with only two BETTER ones.
(Matthew 22:36-40) “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 The second, like it, is this, ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”

Note the last line...On these two...hangs the former ten commandments.

Jesus replaced the Old covenant with the New covenant.
