I went for my first eye exam today, didn't think I needed glasses..I felt the eye doctor was tricking my eyes with her tests..but now, I'm not so sure anyway.

Perhaps your optician used to be a used car salesman!

Seriously, I'm certian your optician must be able make enough money off the people who really do need glasses/contacts; there would be little point in him/her making up some ridiculous story about you needing glasses if your vision is OK.

If you don't feel you need glasses and don't get any symptoms then electing not to get them is fine...provided you meet legal requirements for driving. The optometrist should have shown you your vision with and without the script so you could make a choice and explained why they thought you needed the glasses.

Just wanted to make a quick comment about people telling you to see an ophthalmologist... An opthalmologist doesn't want to test whether or not you need glasses. They are too busy doing surgery and treating serous eye conditions. Trying to see them over glasses is just going to add to their already massive waitings lists.

In Australia many of them dont' even write out scripts... they send peopel to an optometrist to get their eyes tested because thats what we do. We also are more than capable at picking up eye diseases thank you very much. I'm constantly surprised by people's misconception at what an optometrist actually does.

Some will sway to financial pressures. They're human like the rest of us.
(I left two posts where I was under pressure to act unethically as I saw it. And I have seen people sold tiny prescriptions that I would never have given without considerable discussion as to whether it was worth it. *Sometimes* a small Rx, or a small change in Rx can make a big difference. Often it's a waste of money.)

I'd tend to say avoid big chains, and try to find independent practitioners on the recommendation of family and friends, not on how much money they've spent on advertising (they have to get it back somehow!)

25/65 is an unusal acuity result. If correct it says you were tested at a longer than average distance, but have less than half of normal vison sharpness at that range.
You'd be, at best, borderline legal for driving.

Optometrist, retired.
(and to comment on another answer,: I've referred thousands of diseases, thank you! And saved a few lives in my time. No I don't treat such, as a rule. I *find*.)

I think the eye-care corrective-lens industry and philosophy has flaws. I believe that contrary to popular belief, your eye shape can correct itself over time, if given the right stimulus. But that doesn t mean that your optician or optometrist is a liar.

Think of it this way: In a way, they ve been partially charged with the responsibility of making sure drivers on the road can see clearly for everyone s safety. So they need to prescribe for your "worst case scenario" vision. i.e. dim, dark roadways. Sure, you don t need that strong of a prescription for most things, but you definitely do need it for nighttime driving.

You have the potential to be your own best doctor. If you think you could use a lighter prescription for say... computer work, then take charge of your life and do it. And talk to your eye doctor as well, communicate your concerns to them. If you never say anything, then how can they know?

You better than anybody else knows if you need glasses or not.
Can you read up close, can you read signs that are far away?
Do you have any difficulty functioning day to day?
If you answer Yes then you probably need glasses. Maybe not all the time but certain times.
You may have problems seeing far away so you would need corrective lens for driving. Rest of the time you won't need them.
I wore glasses just to drive.

Of course...it means money $$$ to them. Reality would seem to be that YOU should know if YOU need glasses. Is your vision blurry at short distances or long distances? Is there another problem with your eyes? Get a second opinion or a third if you need to. Ask around for a referral to an Ophthalmologist. Good Luck.

20/20 is good. 25/65 is in need of glasses, period.

Sure.
When money is involved people will lie through their teeth to get it.

But I would be more concerned with having an Optician telling you that you need glasses due to his lack of education. An Ophthalmologist is the one I would listen to. Opticians aren't trained to diagnose eye diseases and what not.
