There is No penalty for interpreting God's word inaccurately unless you claim you are a preacher or teacher. The Penalty for that if you do not correct it you will be in danger of God 's wrath. But, in a religion that man controls you will be punished by man himself.
Bonus Question: God gives us faith by His Spirit and what we read in His Word is Good! If you stick with only asking the basic questions: Who, What, Where, Why and How, you will not make the mistake of What God envisions

As humans we make mistakes, and I'm sure sometimes the Bible is interpreted incorrectly, but I'm not sure if there is a punishment. As far as interpreting it for yourself, you should really read the book Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell.
Bonus: Gd's word means something different to everyone. One of my teachers once said that we often learn the same things about the Bible over and over again, but it's just presented to us in a new way.

Well, there is some degree of penalty........whether here and now or there and then ............your guess is as good as mine. I know the book of Revelation has a curse on it for those who misquote or interpret it wrong.
My personal interpretation could very well be wrong from time to time, but if so, the Holy Spirit will correct me .....and He has before. If I purposely gave a wrong meaning to someone though, I'm afraid God would let me know, in a very strong way, that I'm in trouble with Him simply because it's a serious thing in the eyes of the Lord to lead anyone astray on purpose. And there are plenty of fake preachers, leaders who do this. They're punishment will be greater because they misguided others. (They most likely are "fake" as I stated, imposter's, wolves in sheep's clothing, apostate) Some of the advantages of being a Christian is the indwelling Holy Spirit. He lets us know when we sin, reveals the meaning of the Word, comforts us when we need comforting, encourages us when we need it, and on and on. He indwells us permanently. Always with us to help us. He is our interpreter.

It is a sin to interpret the Word wrong, simply because the truth needs to be told and heard. It is life to the soul but, again God knows the heart but that is why we trust God to give the true understanding. To your second question, the Holy Spirit bringing peace to my heart on things concerning the Word of God.

The most important thing you need to know about the Bible and God is this: whatever is done to Israel will be done to the 'doer'.

Jesus is the only way to salvation, God and heaven. All other routes lead to eternal hell and damnation.

God created Israel. All other countries were formed as a result of wars. God punishes and/or kills because of disobedience. Read the whole Bible not just cherry-picked scriptures.

The penalty for intentionally misleading people is found in Revelation 22:18 "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
22:19 "And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book."

However, I've read ten different translations, and they all say that God is love, Jesus is lord, and He paid the penalty for our sins. That is what counts.

The Bible tells us who the great deceiver is, and he will certainly twist the Bible, and will deceive the very elect. See http://abiblecode.tripod.com

Jesus appointed a Church to interpret the Bible for us. The holy Catholic and apostolic Church. This is the penalty if anyone does not heed the teachings of the Church.

Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me." - Luke 10,16
