A guy at work said they are sending him and his girlfriend to visit his uncle in germany who was shot in Iraq.

No. The program is called "Blue Bark" and it's restricted to travel at government expense for the parents or spouse of someone who is in serious or critical condition. It's possible that the nephew is the immediate next-of-kin, but the girlfriend doesn't rate a trip to Germany.

I very much doubt it.

The guy would not even be considered a close relative by the military. And the girlfriend even less of a relative.

The cost to the US Taxpayer would be enormous.
