I ask because white Christians made them slaves. Apparently, the Vatican and the Protestant Church of England interpreted (from the bible) that black people had no soul and thus "should be enslaved".

Was that a simple misunderstanding or were your Christian forefathers just a bunch of bigots? Or maybe they were misguided - please - share the REAL truth... or maybe you'd rather skip this question altogether... no matter... God's not watching... sometimes he blinks, right?

We cannot directly attribute racism towards African Americans, in particular, as stemming from the Bible. However, we can indirectly lay blame on the Bible for the enslavement of black people and the bigotry against them, because though the Bible doesn’t mention Africans much, it does repeatedly uphold the practice that one set of human beings has the divine right to subjugate another set of human beings.

In the Old Testament, especially in the Pentateuch, we see repeated guidelines, which the Jewish people must abide by, concerning the acquisition of slaves, their treatment while captive, and the grounds by which they could be freed. All of these terms, concerning slavery, were given to the Jews, IRONICALLY, after their freedom from bondage was won from Egypt. Talk about not practicing what you preach, or better yet, not doing onto others as you would have them do unto you!

The New Testament, much to the embarrassment of Christians, doesn’t reprove the practice of slavery, but instead the Apostle Paul exhorts slaves to be obedient to their masters, and for masters to not to treat them too harshly. Nowhere does Paul, a man that Christians elevate as this paragon of morality, ever compel true believers to release their slaves and state that this is the most Christian thing to do. Christ is conspicuously mute on this subject as well. You would think an omnipotent and omniscient God, while on earth, would have enough foresight to see the destructive effects of this inhumane practice and would have the moral sense to mention a word against it in the “holy” text that bears his authority.

With all that said the Bible condones, and in many cases, outright endorses the enslavement of whole groups of people, and generally these slaves are acquired through conquest that God mandated . So, it is only a logical extension to think, as many white slave owners did, that if European imperial power was able to conquer African nations, the way the Israelis were able to conquer the Hittites, Amorites, and the Philistines, and were subsequently allowed ownership of human beasts of burden as the spoils of this conquest, then why cannot European men have dominion over those whom they defeated and conquered.

If one follows the Bible to the letter, slavery, discrimination, and treating certain people like second class citizens is par for the course, and there is nothing immoral about. Once again we have another, in a long list of biblical related ideologies, which demonstrates that Christianity is not the foundation for a kinder and gentler world. We get more and more moral, ethical, and humane, the more we relegate Christianity, Islam, and Judaism to the dustbin of ancient mythology.

Just as an aside to the respondent TiBarbie, I would like to say that the tower of Babel story in the book of Genesis shows that God doesn't relish racial differences, and in fact this primitive book actually attributes our linguistic and ethnic differences as a PUNISHMENT for man's hubris. So far from making our racial diversity something to be proud of, the Book of Genesis clearly emphasizes that our racial makeup is a punishment from the All Mighty.

This is where linguistics come into play. What is a witch? Well in Wiccan a witch is just a female practicer of the faith, that presumes to cast spells. (I'm sorry if I am disrespectfull...Im not sure exactly what Wiccans believe) The Christian definition of a witch is a woman that casts spells with the help of the Devil. That devil bit is crucial. So what we have here is the word witch with two similar, yet quite different connotations. But keep in mind, the bible is not originally written in English, but it was written in Hebrew and Greek, but later translated into Latin. So I will use Latin as an example. Latin has many words for witch, malefica is the most common. The root "male" simply means evil and "fica" is related to the word facere- to do or make. So a malefica is simply a feminin evil do-er, a maleficus would be a Masculine evil do-er. If I were to translate the idea of a female practicer of Wicca into Latin, I wouldn't use the word maleficus, I would call you a wiccana. My point is, the bible never tells people to harm female practicers of Wicca, it asks people to harm female evil do-ers that receive aid from the devil. Linguistically calling you a witch is a bit of a misnomer. If Christians give you a hard time, it is out of ignorance, not theology.

Slavery is not an issue only relating to race.
If you had ever read the bible you would know that the Hebrew people were made to be slaves in Egypt.
I simply do not understand where you have aquired this idea.
Read The story of Moses where he married a woman of another race, an Ethiopian woman. God justified him.
Numbers 12 verses 1-9

Well first of all the Vatican has nothing to do with the Protestant Church of England. It is for the Catholic faith. Secondly Africans were the biggest slave traders and sold the people to traders to work the fields.
I hate that there are slaves even today in the world. Can we try to focus on what is happening today in the world and not dredge up the past again and again.
I am white and my forfathers helped with the Erie Canal, a slave escape route to the northern states of which I am very proud. However, because I am white some black people hate me because of the slave issue. Isn't this strange also?

The history we studied is modern history not ancient history, many people don't know who the Moorish people are and what influences they had in Europe. If the subject is brought up the first questions asked is, what race were they? As early as the Middle Ages, Moors were viewed as being black or dark olive skinned who ruled the world before the word ***** was used, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Google moors and you'll get the understanding why black African history has been erased to support white posterity. The people that call themselves Jews today,,.... are not the real Jews. Many people have already dug and found-out they are imposters. The bible states in Revelations 2:9 , I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Many people are coming to understand this. The Palestinians have known this for sometime -- that's why they don't want to split or share any land with them. But the truth is still much deeper than that.
This is the where the truth seems to lose 99.9% of white people because of a subconscious guilt condition. The real jews are the black people that were scattered amongst the nations during the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. I know that puts a big lump in a lot of throats because they know how they've thought of blacks, mistreated blacks, and haven't treated blacks fairly. If you know this -- it's time to repent. To be quite honest, and sadly many blacks are still comfortable believing that Jesus was white rather than asking God to help them understand and do the research for themselves. If you trace the migrations of the Jews, (The children of Isareal) you will find they had migrated to the very places they were taken from as slaves during the Trans-Alantic Slave Trade. My dears we are the true Jews, we are the ones God is talking about in the old testament. To be quite honest, and sadly many blacks are still comfortable believing that Jesus was white rather than asking God to help them understand and do the research for themselves. At any rate, Deuteronomy 28 outlines the BLESSINGS and the CURSES that would be bestowed upon God's chosen people based on whether they OBEYED his commandments or DISOBEYED his commandments . You can read it for yourself. The people that currently call themselves Jews fit ZERO of the curses that are CLEARLY upon black people today. And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. Deuteronomy 28:46. These curses are to serve as a sign for the nations to know who the true children of Israel are. These are some of the curses: In Genesis 15:13 God said to Abram, Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years. 14"But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve. The only brutal slave trade known to human history is the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade that lasted exactly four hundred years. Can anyone say that God is a liar?

Umm, the BIBLE doesn't hate black people, nor God - perhaps some white Christians made slaves in history gone by - and they were wrong. It is very sad that they may have misquoted scripture, and interpretations and peoples views - not Gods and certainly not anywhere I've seen in the Bible! How sad if that were true!

The Bible does not "hate black people." In fact, there is strong evidence to suggest that the following Biblical people were black:

...................................................................................................

* The Queen of Sheba. The queen, who visited King Solomon and marveled at his wisdom, was queen of Ethiopia and Egypt. In scripture, she is called "the queen of the South." Scriptures: I Kings 10:1; II Chronicles 9:1; St. Matthew 12:42.

* Zipporah. She was Moses' Cushite wife. It is said that Moses' siblings, Aaron and Miriam, did not like her. Some say it was because of a family spat. Others claim it's because Zipporah, daughter of Jethro, was Black. Scripture: Numbers 12:1.

* Ebed-melech. This Ethiopian eunuch saved the life of Jeremiah, the prophet. Scriptures: Jeremiah 38:7-13; 39:16.

* Ethiopian Eunuch. This unnamed eunuch received a spiritual conversion and a better understanding of the Scriptures after speaking with Philip. Scriptures: Acts 8:26-40.

* Hagar. She was Sarah's Egyptian handmaiden, and she eventually had Abraham's first son, Ishmael. Scriptures: Gen. 16:1,3; 21:9.

* Pharaoh Tirharkah. He was an Ethiopian king. II Kings 19:9.

* Asenath. She was the Egyptian wife of Joseph, given to him by the Pharaoh. Asenath and Joseph had two sons, Manessah and Ephraim. Scriptures: Gen. 41:45.

* Simon of Cyrene. He helped Jesus carry the cross. Cyrene was an ancient city in Libya, Africa. Scriptures: St. Mark 15:21.

.................................................................................................

And in addition to that, there are a few black saints recognized by the Catholic church (St. Martin de Porres, St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Monica...) In fact, St. Martin is even the patron saint of racial harmony and social justice. That doesn't sound like something that came from a religion that feels that black people have "no souls."

I have never heard that the Vatican and/or the Protestant Church of England used anything in the Bible to say that black people had no souls and should be enslaved. In the future, please site your sources before you post such remarks. Thank you.

Christians are sinners just like everyone else. Some people even claim to be Christian, but their not at all. Slavery, that was a bad time, it all started when the morrs (spelling) invaded europe, we captured them, made them slaves, and eventually went for their families. They would have done the same to us had they been victorious, but that not a good excuse. It happened, I had nothing to do with it. Also, one of the first non-jew Christian converts was black, from ethiopia, the was a eunice (spelling) slave, you know, no hang downs.
