We have a comedian/journo type guy here in Australia called John Safran, and he has a television show called 'John Safran Vs. God'.
One time he actually went with his producer over to Utah (you know, the Morman 'bible belt') and dressed up in the classic black pants, white shirt, black tie and went door knocking early one morning.
When the residents opened their door, he politely said "Good morning sir/madam! I was wondering if I could talk to you today about Athiesim?"
The response he got was hillarious..! A few wanted to punch his head in! His point was that why was it ok for them to do it, but not him with his own views? lol
Anyhoo, if you don't want them to come back you can always do what my partner did and answer the door naked... We haven't seen them since!! lol

I agreed with everyone above this answer. But would you feel the same if the knock at the door was from a Christian? I think you would as do I. I HATE people I didn't invite to come to my door.

When they go out in service(door to door preacher) they have a little list of the all the house on each street. Each time they go to a house the record what happens, so if you ask them to put you address on the "do not call" list they shouldn't come back.

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded YOU.
We are just following this commandment to preach. We are there to encourage and share the good news of the Kingdom.
If your not interested please just tell them that, and they will respect your decision and leave.
Nice talking to you and have a nice day.

I think it's part of their "training" or something. I just say to them - "no thank you - I already have my beliefs and am very commited to them", and close the door. So, I am polite, but do not want to hear them go on and on - actually, I have pretended I wasn't home once...
It's just their way of "sharing" their beliefs and they are never usually rude or nasty - just doing what they feel is right.

You can actually request that they do not come back. They will put your address on a list, so that when they are in your neighborhood they will not call on you. Of course it's not foolproof, but repeated requests and they usually get the message. At least they did that back in the day.

Ironically, in many parts of the United States Jehovah's Witnesses no longer inquire the householder's name on their initial visit. While it hardly seems "rude" to do so, concerns about crime and privacy have made many householders somewhat hesitant to share any personal information at all. As students of the bible, Jehovah's Witnesses are certainly not surprised by this state of fear.
(Luke 21:25-28) Also, there will be signs...and on the earth anguish of nations, not knowing the way out ...while men become faint out of fear and expectation of the things coming upon the inhabited earth... But as these things start to occur, raise yourselves erect and lift your heads up, because your deliverance is getting near.
(2 Timothy 3:1-7) In the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.
While they do hope to share a message of "good news" from the bible, Jehovah's Witnesses certainly do not intend to do so rudely. A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "recruit" a householder, or get him to "convert". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!
That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.
(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.
Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:
(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

Yes, it's rude! Put a sign on your door that says, "No solicitation" and the next time...point to the sign and shut the door. If they come again threaten to call the police. Religion should never be forced.

My father used to get angry with them for doing door-to-door preaching. Be firm and say you're not interested, and look at their face to see that they understand this. You need to convey the message that they have no reason to come back.
