i had an operation 1 year ago removing an ovary-cest i had. the operation took longer than what it suppose to be, when we asked why, doctors told us that they found a bleeding in my colon that needed some stitches, but now all alright. i had doubt regarding that bleeding. as how it did happened? i've been told by another friend-doctor that the doctors are the ones who pierced my colon mistakenly during operation(micro) she told me that happened a lot! i believed her as if i have been bleed' long before operation then i'd have died from that! my question now is should i worry about the stitches in my colon? can this mistake disturb my natural colon functions? can this lead to other problems(alcers or so..) know' that i used to have an irritable bowel syndrom(IBS) especially under stress i used to have very bad abdominal pain. Now i do feel this very often too, specially when train' or carry' heavy things, am i hurt' my stitched colon like this? what else should i do& not do?? Thanx.

Not to worry. It is an unfortunate and frequent happening with abdominal surgery. Like the heart, the bowel moves by itself & is a large, slippery organ. Surgeons do their best to contain it, but sometimes it happens. You are completely healed in a few days & the stitches dissolve. The big thing that could have happened - and didn't - was that you could have got an infection. Relax - you are fine. When you strain & carry heavy stuff - wear a back brace. Good health to you.

The colon is anatomically related to the ovary.
During surgery some adhesions may be discovered between them.
Attempts to dissect these adhesions may be associated with colon injury.
Fortunately, it was discovered and repaired with sutures, otherwise it would have contaminated your abdominal cavity, as contents of the colon pass through the site of injury.
In case it was undiscovered you would have developed peritonitis: a life threatening problem.
Once repaired, the injury heals without any further complications.
You should forget about that event now as a cause of your pain since you already have irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) especially under stress and you used to have very bad abdominal pain.
If the pain is increasing, a year after surgery, that signifies a progress in the IBS itself.
To confirm, you can have a pelvic ultrasound and a barium enema to rule out any problem and you better consult your Gynecologic Surgeon and a Gastroentrologist.

If it happened a year ago and you are having normal bowel movement you are fine The colon would have healed by now and the stitches disolved. The pain you are feeling could be scar tissue from the cyst removal surgery. People have surgery to the colon (colon cancer, polyps, diverticulitis) and come through just fine.

Are you having problems at this time with your colon? If not, I would say that you are okay and that it is nothing to worry about.
