but as soon as it's some offbeat religion that's being discussed (SDA, Mormonism, Scientology, whatever), these are the very same people who pile on and insult them as "cults"

One of the teachings of one of those "cults" is something along the line of "2 people discuss but it takes 3 people to argue". They are saying that for there to be an argument, one person has someone behind them (parents, teachers, friends, majority) telling them that they are right. Thats what I see on here alot. Some discuss, and others spit out venom that they seem to have just gotten from someplace else (church, other posts on here, south park) while admitting they never met one or visited their churches.

Yeah; I know what you mean.
It seems they don't know of the words Pots, Kettles, Irony and Hypocrisy.

I come here for the comedy and it's rare a fundie doesn't give me a belly laugh.

Yes, I've witnessed that first hand. My fundy mother holds her own pentecostal Catholic sister in complete contempt, like she's a piece of crap. Amazing isn't it?

-In a singsong voice- Hypocrisy!!! -ends singsong voice- How quaint isn't it? That they are so...indignant...when we "make fun" of their religion, and when some "offbeat religion" is mentioned, Christians go in and do even worse bashing than what the most spiteful atheist can do...it's rather shocking, yet hysterically captivating....hope this helps! ^_^

because they ARE a cult, by definition.
Mormonism is closer to a religion, but the end result has cult.

Well everybody can't be right, now can they? There ARE many cults out there - certainly you realize that.
