I have a checking account but no credit/debit card I pay for everything cash and check. So, what do people in last minute situations do?

Get a debit card, if you have a checking account you should have access to a debit card. Hotels need the CC in order charge incidentals that you might charge up while at the hotel. Not sure of any hotel that would let you off without a cc.
