I've been a Protestant Christian my entire life, and guess what? I totally and utterly agree with you. Satan is an excuse. Men and women have the ability to make their own decisions on what is right and what is wrong. They are responsible for their own decisions. So even if Satan exists, he is irrelevant and useless as an excuse for the wrongs of the world. You are right: Satan IS a cop out.

I thought I quote an expert in suffering, JOB. He was a righteous man. Never done anything wrong that he could tell. Yet God turned out to give him a real hard time. Job admits that God is not only the author of human and natural tragedies, but that he laughs at his innocent victims!
Job 9:23-24 (NIV) When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent. When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?
Christians blame Satan for what happened to Job, but God takes full credit for all the evil that he did to Job. He also endorses Jobs comments about his ordeal (Job 42:7-9).
Job 42:11 (KJV) Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him:
Best advice in the Bible...
Ecclesiastes 7:13-14 (NIV) Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked? When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other.
Modern day Christianity disconnected itself from reality to follow a marketing scheme... No preacher will ever admit that the Bible God is the author of any adversity!

The Satan is described in only a few places in the Hebrew Scriptures. In every instance, he is an angel who works FOR God, not against God, and must get permission from God for everything that he does. Chronicles, Job, Psalms, and Zechariah are the only places where The Satan is mentioned. In each instance, the job description of The Satan is to act like what we now call a Prosecuting Attorney, or District Attorney, and accuse and show evidence against the defendant. Furthermore, like a D.A., The Satan must obtain permission from God, The Judge, to begin a sting operation.

There are many people who want to have someone to blame, despite what an earlier person said. And there are some of the more Extremist Fundamentalist Christian sects that DO blame Satan and "demons" for the Evils of the world and the evil that men do.

Avi,
Some people cannot accept responsibility for their own actions and blame others or Satan for their bad luck, wrong doings or failures. However, Satan is tricky. When he sees something that is good, he will try his hardest to get in there and make it bad. I truly believe Satan makes his presence known in the form of hate, anger, rage, jealousy, and greed in those who let their guard down. So really, Satan may truly be at fault.

I agree. I am a Pagan, so I don't believe in a satan. However, I do believe in spirits, and they're just as good an explanation as any, especially if we do something evil that is completely out of character for us. Stuff like really grinding a spider into the floor, when a quick squish with a tissue would have worked.

I don't. I'm a Witch and don't need an entity of supreme evil to scare me into doing the right thing, or to be the scapegoat for my mistakes. I own up to everything I do, the right and the wrong.

FOR THOSE WHO ACTUALLY DO IT!!!! You got it in your question...they seem to not be able to take personal responsibility for their action, good or otherwise. Have you ever noticed, that when something good happens to them (most of the time by their OWN sweat and blood) they always thank God? And when something bad happens to them (or if they do something wrong) they sometimes say that the Devil did it? Why can't the accept the fact that they did it themselves, the good and the bad. Not ALL do it...but I know a lot that do...

Boy what you know about Christianity could fill a thimble.
"The Devil Made Me Do It" excuse hasn't been used since Flip Wilson put on a dress in the early '70s!
The truth is - we make mistakes, we screw up, we fall down; we commit sin - sometimes the same sin over and over and over again - we make bad decisions, wrong choices, etc.
But Praise the Lord - HE is always there to pick us up, dust us off - and move on!
We are neither defined nor condemned by our sins....like some people.

We each make decisions on which path to take, whether good or evil which is why everyone is held accountable in the next life for the path they have chosen...Choose wisely.
