I found an ad on craiglsist looking for a student photographer for their wedding since they were on a tight budget. The wedding is on a Friday afternoon and I work a 9-5 job. This isnt until January so I feel if I am using it as one of my allotted vacation days, I should be able to do whatever I want with it, even if I am making money on the side. My boyfriend says this is not right since I will still be getting paid from my regular salaried job as well. I think it would only be wrong if I was claiming a sick day or something like that. Would you agree?

I work at an ad agency for my full time job, I do not handle photography though, it is just a hobby of mine

What kind of job do you have currently? Is it a career type job?

I'd go ahead and take the vacation day but i also would not lie. If they asked I would tell them that i was going to photograph a wedding in the afternoon.

Does this side-job is it in the same profession as your 9-5 job? If you are a photographer for your 9-5 gig then i would be opposed to you taking off to go photograph someones wedding. Since you said they were looking for a student photographer, then I am assuming that your day job has nothing to do with photography. You should be good to go. Have fun!

There is nothing wrong with it. The only way it could be wrong is if you were working for the competion which you're not or calling in sick (which you're not). My brother does this all the time. he takes a week off of work for a vacation. on that vacation he works for a friend of ours' company to make extra money. it works out great. if that's what you want to do with your vacation time it's no big deal.

As long as your employers have plenty of notice for your vacation day, then it's not at all unethical to take one in order to do pursue a side venture. Unless your company has a clause in their employee handbook against it (which I don't think they would), then you're free to do whatever you want on your "vacation"!
Taking a sick day to do this would be unethical since (I assume) you'd only let your company know that day or the day before (you can't really tell them a week in advance that you're going to be sick, right? lol) and you'd possible be leaving them high and dry at that point.
Tell your boyfriend to relax and let you enjoy your double-paying vacation! :)

I agree with you 150%. Why would your boyfriend even suggest it's wrong? When you are on vacation you do what you want to do. Simple as that. You are going to take the whole day right? Have fun.

I agree; if you are using one of your vacation days, then it's up to YOU to decide how you spend it. I likewise agree that if you were taking a sick day that would be wrong, but the vacation time is yours to do with as you choose. Boyfriend needs to mind his own business on this one; he's wrong.

Completely ethical.

As you say, taking a sick day to moonlight would be completely out of line. If you have vacation time on the books, however, you can do whatever you want with it -- including work.

Your boyfriend is a total pansy. Take every morsel that a company gives and don't think twice of it. As long as you work hard while you're there, take all of your sick days and vacation days, unless you can sell them or let them roll over.

I think that it is perfectly fine to work on your vacation, it is YOUR vacation, do what you want whether it is earning money or not, it is none of your bosses business.

and I feel if your a healthy person, it's not fair other people get away from work... and you never do... so it is your concious on that one.

Vacation time is yours to do what you'd like. It's completely ethical to work on your time off. Calling in sick to work wouldn't be right, but use your vacation time as you see fit--that's why they give it to you, so you have some time to use as you want.
