I am embarressed to ask as I am an avid camper, but have never needed to use one as I have an excellent tent.
My children are doing some fall camping with Guides this weekend and on their kit list it asked for a ground sheet. They will be in tents and I am assuming that this is to go under their sleeping bag inside the tent. So can a tarp be used? I would preassemble there sleeping bags like this--Bottom to top-- tarp, waterproof foam to reduce cold and added comfort, sleepingbag with flanel sheet inside....

My ans. is too late 4 UR wk.nd. trip but a ground sheet should be under the tent and from 2-4 inches smaller than the tent bottom to prevent the rain or any moisture from dripping from the tent unto the groung sheet running under and collecting in the pressured hollows that will form in the living area. The forementioned ditch should be a must, good plan Beth p.~~~Funny,- 4 Strings has the simplest and yet the correct ans. to the que.

Tarps are great for camping uses but for your only tent shelter they have limited value. The tarp offers zero bug protection as stated all ready. You do save a lot of weight that's for sure and the configurations in using them are almost endless. A have the tarp tent combo that's already mentioned, the Hennesy hammock I don't think that I am a cultist in using it but I have not slept in anything better. Getting yourself up off the hard damp ground has been a life and back saver for me. and most of the camping I have done is below tree line so it's never been a problem finding the right place to hang it up. Heavy rains are nasty for tarp use as water gets in somewhere guaranteed, you don't have that problem in a Hennesy. I do also bring an additional tarp for added shelter or to lay out and sit on and heavy duty trash bags these are both essentials in winter snow camping. I would agree summiting requires a better tent and tarps or even the hennesy would not be practical and the Jardin tent would face the same issues. If I had to make a choice between a tarp, the hennesy or jardin or a regular tent for the PCT I would of course pick the hennesy. You can avoid camping at summit locations with good planning and save those for singular trips where packing a tent would be better.

YES...Of course a Tarp can be used. You can fold it to whatever size you need to fit the tent floor. The biggest reason it is needed is for a moisture barrier to prevent additional moisture coming up through the ground into the tent interior making everything wet. For supposedly not knowing what you are doing, I'm impressed. You have the "layer" principal down pat already. If the ground they are going to erect their tent on has a high moisture content to begin with. It might not be a bad idea to put a tarp down on the ground first and the tent on top. Then have an additional tarp inside to act as a liner on the tent floor....Either way you should be good to go and the kids will be comfortable as a result. That's what matters.Good Luck......

Yes you can use a tarp as a ground sheet but put it under the tent. It will help prevent getting holes in the tent floor.

You put a tarp under the tent and get sleeping bag pads for in the tent.

Yes, and in addition to using a ground sheet under the tent, many people also dig a shallow trench around their tents, connecting to another trench angled off (downhill) into the woods to keep any rain run-off from puddling around the tent; it keeps everything- and everyone- a lot drier!

a trap will be just fine. I prefer to use a space blanket as a ground sheet its lighter and cheaper.
