I'm currently talking to a recruiter. I have 2 step daughters and a daughter that live with me, and a son that doesn't. My recruiter told me that I might have to sign up for army reserve and then try to change to active duty because of how many kids I have. Does that sound right to anyone? and if so... why? and yes I am married and my wife would be home with the children.. (thats why i stated that they were my step daughters)

It doesn't matter how many children you have, you can still go active duty.

you have too many dependents for Active Duty(depending on how the custody of your son is written, you could have either 4 or 5 dependents).,the limit is three for initial entry into the Active Duty services.

so yes, your only option might be Reserves. HOWEVER, there are no promises made that you will be able to Go Full Active later on. My cousin was able to do it(a wife and 3 boys), but he was Prior service who was IRR and was recalled to duty. Didn't hurt that he's a 68W and they are desperate to keep them on AD.
