The stray (whom I know to be a male) who is usually shy began walking forward closer to the screen door to my cat. My cat began to meow louder than I've ever heard her meow, like she was being tortured! She has been fixed and has annual shots, but she seemed VERY scared of this other cat and backed away from the screen door while meowing. She still seems terrified even though I shut the door. The stray, however, is still sitting outside my door and WILL NOT MOVE. What should I do? Is the stray dangerous to me? Why did my cat have such a strong reaction? I know cats meow wildly when they are in heat, but obviously my cat isn't, so what's the deal? She's been around other cats before (I got her from the local humane society) but she was more upset than I've ever seen her before. Furthermore, what should I do to get the other cat to leave my door? Please HELP!!! I don't know what to do!

Let it be for a time- and keep ur cat away from the stray. Is ur cat spayed? because she should be and either she maybe scared of a cat or that its coming into her territory and she wants to scratch the living daylights out of it. talk to a vet or a cat expert and ask them your question. you should find out what the cat hates and use that. u DONT WANT TO USE PESTICIDES! make loud racket or shoo him away, this stray should be know threat to u unless it shows signs of aggression or fear. If aggression happens call animal control or the humane society and see what they can do to help

I took in a stray last week he was looking abit not healthy extremly skinny and scruffy. He is now a delightful pet I don't no why I never considered getting a cat sooner. Vet bills for strays can be pricey cause I've had to get him wormed and all the other jabs. If your not willing to pay that for a stray call a cat shelter or animal help shelter. And if the strays hang around your house is probably due to they know cats live there so they are clearly expecting shelter or food. They must of had a previous owner before but been left if they were wild strays they would of learned to catch their own food. Hope this helps

The outdoor guy was most likely just curious. A 7 pound cat won't up and attack a cat owner so don't worry. Usually they won't even stay in 15 feet if a person steps outside the door.

Your indoor cat likely didn't believe the closed door would protect her so she put up as loud a front as she could to intimidate the other cat (who obviously wasn't intimidated). She'll be upset and touchy till she figures out he didn't get in the house. Give her time to calm down. It helps to distract them sometimes with quiet noises like having the radio or tv on low.

A stray won't attack unless you're trying to break up a cat fight (all bets are off then, they think anything around them is going to attack). You're safe from him.

Born2beblond, what you said doesn't make sense. If the cat had rabies and attacked you, you would have gotten rabies. Yet you obviously didn't. What gives?

That sounds like pretty much a normal reaction in cats....Even though you have introduced your cat to other ones, each cat your cat meets is different. I thought the same thing too once before that my cat would react fine to the new one we were bringing home because he was fine with the other one we had brought home a while before, but did I get the surprise of my life when I let down the new cat! I watched as my cat acted like I have never seen him behave before. It just goes to show that your cat can do things strange things that you have never seen before and may never see in it's lifetime. It just depends as to what situations it comes into.
As far as getting the stray from your door, think of things that would deter your cat if you didnt want it to go into a certain room, or stop doing something. My first gut instinct would be to get a cup of water or a squirt bottle and start throwing or squirting water at it. that right there would make it move.Cats hate water. If you had a squirt bottle you wouldnt even have to open the screen door, just do it through the screen, it may get a little wet, but the cat would go away.

Strays can carry diseases that are dangerous to your cat and if he has rabies, you could get sick if he bites you. I would just crack the door and yell at him to leave. All cats get antzy about a new cat in their territory but if yours is in and he is out, you don't need to worry. Are you sure he's stray and not a lost pet? Most strays won't just sit there unless they are socialized which means they were once a pet. You might ask your neighbors if they've lost their cat. Call animal control if he's still around in the morning. Since your cat is spayed, the Tom will have no interest in her sexually-she isn't giving off "girl vibes" anymore.

Why is everyone being so mean about a stray cat? He is still a cat and a living thing. Like the other person said he might be a lost pet. Why not try to find his home?

She has been fixed, however, it is possible the tom has not been fixed. The Stray male wants to mate with your cat and she wants no part of it. Get a spray bottle, fill it with water, when you see the cat again, spray him through the screen. Do this every time he returns. He will soon learn if he comes to your door, he will be sprayed with water.. Cats Hate water.

you dont need to get around the stray because it could be dangerous and it would probualy be a good idea to stay away from your cat when he is looking at the stray because if u spook your cat it could attack you....that is what happened to me....HERE IS THE STORY...ok my cat had been meowing so i walked over there to see what he was meowing at and there was the neighbors cat....so i opened the door to shu it away and it attacked me so we sewed the neighbors and got alot of money cause the cat had rabies i had to stay in the hospital for days!!!!!!!!
so please take this advice and be careful!!!

okay first of all,
the cat might have some sort of disease so don't touch it.
when cats first meet it is normal for them to hiss or meow loudly, (mine do it too)
your cat was probably afraid of the stray coming so close to "her territory" that she was warning him to stay away. the best thing to do would turn the cat into a humane society near you so it can find a proper home and not be roaming near people's screen doors.

It's not a big deal except... my cat caught an upper respiratory infection (very common and VERY CONTAGIOUS) from a stray through our open screened window. It's very easy to get sneezed on through the screen, so be very careful about that... our little girl is so not fun to give pills to and it was very stressful seeing out baby sick because of some icky outside cat.
