Its a scam.
Check the website of your local secretary of state for common scams. Most, if not all, states will have a section describing them.
However, I can tell you that your responder is a scam artist. First, no one gives away free money. Second, this scam has been circulating for quite a while now.
The scam is they send you a bad check Than you, being a good person, send the difference back to them. But because the check they sent you was never good, it bounces and leaving you holding the bill.
Look at the language . Not once does the person ask about a sofa. Try sending a reply, asking questions, or describing the sofa. You will get a reply that is so incoherent that you will wonder if the person on the other end can speak English. He can't, because he is living in Africa working for some company that specializes in this scam.
You should just ignore this ad. Don't be fooled.

It is a "Check Overpayment Scam". You can tell for these reasons:
1. The FTC says so. See http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2004/12/checkoverpayment.shtm.
2. A legitimate person would not need to use a financial agent to buy a used sofa on Craig's list.
3. Whenever anyone asks on Yahoo! Answers whether something is a scam, it is a scam.

Yes, this is the classic cheque scam. Basically, Western Union doesn't verify that money orders are real. So they send you the large sum in the form of a money order, and instruct you to then send another portion of that money to a third party. The third party is usually the same person under a pseudonym, or else an accomplice. So you send off the money, but then it turns out that the money order you received initially was fake. By the time you find out, you've already sent your real money to the scammer, and there is nothing you can do to recover it.

Anytime somebody or a company sends you "more" than your asking price it is a RED flag for a scam scam scam. It is not worth taking a chance with getting screwed over by this person. Your bank will tack on bounced check fees, you will be out the money you sent this person. Please please trust me here. I know you don't know me from squat, but I don't want to see another scammer get away with this. Thanks.

I could be wrong; but it sounds like you haven't even shown/sold the couch to this person yet, so why on earth would they already be sending you a check? Read up on this; it could be helpful to you. Good Luck! =)
