I have to write a paper about someone; they should be well-known enough to have some history written about them and their photos. It would also be good if they had an interesting style... thanks

Ansel Adams would be the obvious choice as far as "famous" goes, but personally, I think he's a hack. My favorite black and white photographer is Arno Rafael Minkkinen. There are quite a few websites about his work. He definitely has an interesting style.
