You can not be too honest.

However, some things are best left to be disclosed after you start to get to know someone.

For example: the fact that you have just had gastric bypass surgery should be left out and disclosed later. Instead, mention that you have worked very hard to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Example 2: Mention now that you have brothers and sisters, but only after you are starting to get comfortable (but before beginning a romantic relationship) should you disclose that one of theme is in prison for a sex crime.

These examples are based on actual people that I know or have known who used on-line personals ads.

Also, never include photos of your children in a personals ad. I used to have a rule that I would not answer an ad if there were pictures of the children. This will attract molestors. I did not wish to date women who were okay with the fact that molestors may be replying to the ad.

I had several relationships that worked out using Yahoo Personals and Lavalife. One that did not work out introduced me to the woman who is now my wife and the mother of my children.

Always be completely honest, but keep a few things a mystery until you have established trust.

Volunteering information is not required to be honest. To be honest is simply to tell the truth. Some things are nobody's business. I would not volunteer information in an ad you would not mention on the second date.

Eventually IF there can be a good relationship there will come a time for further truth telling by both parties. It is best to wait for that time and not preempt it unilaterally.

Ya know, I want to say no, because I would be so honest, that I would make myself look like an Ogre or something. All I see are my flaws. However, I suggest you have your friends and family write a description of you, and use that info in your ad. You are now being honest from another point of view, not your own critical one. Other people see things in you that you don't recognize in yourself. Focus on those things.

By too honest, do you mean revealing too much too soon? If so, yes. It is better to only reveal some information after you have known the person for a while. Some things might put off someone who, once they got to know you, might have accepted it, even if it is a flaw. For instance, you might not want to post that you never want to have children. Meeting the right person might change your mind, but, if you put it out there too soon, that right person may never respond. Make sense?

Honesty is always best but that doesn't mean that you have to give up every detail about yourself. You should give your normal info about yourself like some of your likes and dislikes and then maybe put on the site one or two things that you think are unique about you. Leave some things open for question so that you and who ever you are talking to have something to talk about and ask eachother about.

There is no such thing as being too honest. But there is such thing as too much information. It could be a bad thing because some people get offensive about certain things. You shouldnt lie though.

DEPENDS HOW YOU LOOK AT IT.
I MEAN SOMEONE COULD WRITE I WANT A ONE NIGHT STAND AND THE ONE READING COULD FIND THAT OFFENSIVE.
SOME CAN FIND THAT TOO MUCH HONESTY JUST TAKES THE FUN OUT OF GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE OR COMING OFF TOO DESPERATE.
