Prayer is not so much a technique as a relationship. Prayer is a ‘transforming friendship’ that provides something more than getting answers. This ‘transforming friendship’ is the setting in which we develop our confidence in God’s care. Here we prove that he is looking out for us. By prayer we do not merely get the gifts; we also get to know the giver. In prayer we hear his heartbeat, grasp his agenda and begin to identify with his plans for us and our world. This is something that is summed up in the words of the Lord’s Prayer: "Your Kingdom Come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Prayer is a journey of discovery in which God helps us to get a handle on what he is thinking and doing. This process is described by Paul in Romans 8:26-7: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”

People pray because they recognize a Higher Power in their lives. Because of that, they view regular prayer as an obligation and a duty owed to The Higher Power. He already knows all our thoughts, needs, and wants; however, He still wants us to communicate with Him.

In today's materialistic world, people get the wrong impression that God needs our prayer and offerings. This is in contrary to the very definition of God by man. God is above everything which humans know. He also doesnt need anything. He is perfect in all aspects. In fact he is the only entity with perfection on all aspects. But people need to pray becos to upkeep ourselves in our life, to remind ourselves that we are just a creation by a supreme power. Man tends to forget his very own nature and purpose. So he needs to be reminded about this during his busy course of life. Hence we have the concept of prayer which reminds him about the Supreme Creator and helps him to keep away from the sins and bad thoughts. To understand thru an example we can say suppose a beautiful river flows in front of our house and we take bath in that every day 5 times. Will there be any dirt in our body. Answer is yes, with time dirt will get stuck to our body. So this is a cycle and we need to do it till our death.

My prayer (in the Religious Science church) is called Spiritual Mind Treatment. It's not about asking God for anything. It's about using your brain to recognize the God (Love/Power) within you - and then Using it to get what you want. It also involves gratitude - and knowing that the Universe will deliver exactly what it's supposed to deliver.
Hope that makes sense!
Namaste!

Prayer is meant to have a relationship with God. But some Christian just come to Jesus for the wrong reasons. If people were to come to Jesus for the right reason. Prayer would no longer be about their themselves but about the needs of others.

I pray because my higher power commands me to. It's not my place to question my final judge.

Keep on knocking and the door will be opened to you--yes, some ONE is home.
I pray to our Creator YHWH God to thank Him for the innumerable gifts and blessings He bestows upon us.
I pray because I have FAITH that He IS and He becomes the rewarder to those that have faith in Him.
I pray to ask Him how I can honor Him to-day and to thank Him for this opportunity to do so.
I pray to remain close to Him and to tell Him I love Him.
I pray because I want to remain close to my Father, YHWH God in heaven.

The only true prayer is, "Thy WILL be done". Any other prayer is like asking, "Could "my" will be done instead?"
