I constantly feel the need to have my actions approved by other people. even if i've never met them i feel like i need to explain myself. I'm constantly thinking that i sound stupid when i talk and no matter how i try to fix it i just seem to make it worse. how can i stop looking for approval from others? please help if you can.

You have atleast recognized it. Sometimes I can be this way. I have found that when I am around people who always agree with me, freely give compliments, and are otherwise supportive, the need for approval subsides. However, when I am with people who are critical, aloof, unsupportive, and contrary, the problem pops up again.

My suggestion would be to find more people who fall into the first category and scrap as many people as you can who fall into the second category. You might also try some role playing or modeling. Watch a television character who never needs approval, and when the moment strikes think and act as they would. Or, think of situations where you are always explaining yourself and redo them. Ask yourself a question and instead of explaining away, come up with a snappy, confident answer. Hope this helps.

Just try to do a better job and look a little more toward perfection. Then you know you did good and will be no need to ask. When people start to commit on a job well done you will not need to ask.
