Hot dogs refers to a specific kind of sausage. It is originally known as Frankfurter (and sometimes are still called that). It is named after the city it came from, Frankfurt, Germany. However during the war, tensions betweeen the US and Germany were very high. To be more patriotic or w/e americans re-named the frankfurters to hot dog. this was a PR move, just like the recent France-US relations have been strained, and now we hear the name freedom fries to replace french fries

Frankfurters and Wieners are types of sausage, both rather mild, which put in a bun constitute a sandwich. This "Sausage Sandwich" is known as a "Hot Dog". And there are quite a number of stories regarding how this name came to be. The most widely accepted Is that the name was first used by a newspaper cartoonist, Thomas Dorgan" when he could not spell the word Dachshund, for a cartoon sometime in the early 1900s. Unfortunately no one has ever been able to produce a copy of this cartoon. More than likely the term was coined by students at YALE in the late 1800s. A reference to eating "Hot Dogs" can be found in a 1895 copy of the Yale Recorder. This name was more than likely a way the students would poke fun at the quality of "Sausage Sandwiches" served by local street venders.

There is a PBS show about hot dogs and hot dog vendors around the country. It said they don't know for sure but the name came about from the Italian immigrants having a comical name for the sausage sandwich or frankfertersausage and then Connie's came from the Conney Island Park

I've never heard of a sausage sandwich.
I'm gonna guess it was slang used during the turn of the century on the busy city streets in the US. It looks like a weiner dog...then called just a dog...they're hot. Get your hot dogs! Can you see it? I can. I think it's just slang that was created into a household name.

because they're not "sausage sandwiches".
a sausage sandwich is when you take an actual sausage (like an italian one) and put it in a hotdog bun.
plus it just sounds funny.
