I think they are way too long for the small amount they actually accomplish each day.
I'm sure a lot of people in this HOMESCHOOL section HOMESCHOOL their children based partly on that fact.

School is too long, that's why we homeschool. We can get the work done in a fraction of the time, focus on our weak areas, and spend the rest of the time enjoying our areas of special interest. For the 7 year old, that means history (she's a history hound) with hands-on activities that are MUCH more memorable than textbook regurgitating. For the 5 year old that means plenty of time studying life sciences, particularly where animals are involved.
If you don't like spending so much time at school and your parents are supportive of the idea, consider doing an Independent Study Program, transferring to a charter school or home schooling.
What do you REALLY get out of being there 8 hours a day?

Its really frustrating! Public schools keep the students "busy" and away from trouble. That I think is the main porpuse. That is why I homeschool. You finish so much faster at your pace not everyone else's. But then again some students do need eight hours since some are "slow learners". You lose so much time. You barely even have time for yourself! Ever considered home schooling?

I also have school for eight hours a day and it is ridiculous to wake up early to waste your time learning so slowly five days a week. There should be laws against such humiliating stupidity. School should just teach you the facts necessary then let you live in the real world in real time. Like trying to cut diamonds with tuna fish really.

It can depend.
On what public school it is, or if it is private schools.
Private schools usually have very long hours, too long.
Public schools have long hours too, I feel so bad for kids who come home and are exhausted and have to stay up late night doing too much homework.
