There are two types of Catholic priests:

A religious priest is ordained into a religious order like the Society of Jesus (Jesuit) or Franciscans. He receives duty assignments from superiors in their respective religious orders. Some religious priests specialize in teaching, whereas others serve as missionaries in foreign countries, where they may live under difficult and primitive conditions. Other religious priests live a communal life in monasteries, where they devote their lives to prayer, study, and assigned work. These priests take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience.

A diocesan priest is ordained to serve in a specific geographical area (called a diocese). He ministers under the leadership of a bishop, and will more than likely serve as a parish priest. These priests take vows of chastity and obedience but not poverty.

Your question just describes men who are called to either type of priesthood.

With love in Christ.

That would depend on the status of the "religious" who is studying for Holy Orders. I mean, if he's a monk already, then he would be "Brother" So-and-so. He is being sponsored by the Order. As you may know...the Abbot is on the same ecclesiastical level as a Bishop Ordinary, so - the monk would be responsible to him.

Now...a Diocesan aspirant would have no special classification unless he had already received Deacon's Orders. Usually, an aspirant or postulant for Holy Orders is sponsored by a parish and would be subject to his Rector, as opposed to the Diocesan Bishop.

I am not Roman Catholic, but our systems are similar and based on the same canon laws.

Our candidates are NOT diocesan...

I would try to talk about it more. I would ask for more about why she feels there is a barrier. It's not just friends either. My sister is very religious. I love her with all of my heart which breaks when she says things like "Your father's mom would have lived longer if he had Jesus" or "It's only because of God that you have the things you do". I wonder if she's trying to make me see the light in some wierd way...? When certain topics are taboo I try to leave them be. I don't talk about my Atheism to those I know it would make uncomfortable. I wish others would extend the same courtesy. I see some people losing friends for coming out and that saddens me. I don't get how someone can be such a great friend and everything and then when they find out a particular view you have or lifestyle choice (or other thing they may not agree with but that has zero effect on them whatsoever) how they could suddenly lose respect for you or change their feelings about you. On the other hand, when I read an answer like someone posted here about overhearing someone going off full of hate and intolerance I think if it was me I might conclude that they might not be the kind of person I want to know.... Hmmmm
